💡 The Short Version: Livraria Lello sells a €15.95 voucher to every visitor, even to buy a book, and the voucher is valid for up to 60 minutes after the time on it. The Torre dos Clérigos (€10) is a timed ticket and takes no bags. The Palácio da Bolsa (€14) can be seen only on a 30-minute guided tour, and the language depends on who arrives first. The Porto Card cannot be bought (unavailable since July 2026), and the Guindais funicular has been shut since 18 July 2026. The Soares dos Reis and the municipal museums close on Mondays, the Bolhão market and the Majestic Café on Sundays. Porto charges €3 a night in tourist tax, up to 7 nights. Or book a tour: the 3-hour guided walking tour of the old townad is from €22 (GetYourGuide), and the sight tickets are bought separately.

What to book before you go

Prices are the adult rate, from each sight’s own site. Searches for these sights return many sellers with the monument’s name in their web address that are not the sight. The genuine channels are the sight’s own ticket page and Porto e Norte’s official booking site, linked below.

Closed days

  • Monday: the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, World of Discoveries and the municipal Museu do Porto sites are closed, and the FC Porto museum opens only from 14:30. Livraria Lello, the Torre dos Clérigos, the Igreja de São Francisco, the Sé, Serralves, World of Wine and the Gaia cable car are open.
  • Sunday: the Mercado do Bolhão and the Majestic Café are closed. The municipal Museu do Porto sites are free, and Spiritus has three sessions instead of six.
  • Holidays: Livraria Lello is closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday (28 March 2027), 1 May, 24 June (São João) and 25 December. The Soares dos Reis is closed on the same days. The Torre dos Clérigos is open 365 days a year, from 11:00 on 25 December and 1 January and until 14:00 on 24 and 31 December.
  • Last entry is 30 minutes before closing at the Clérigos, and at the Soares dos Reis at 17:30.
  • The Guindais funicular has carried no passengers since 18 July 2026. STCP calls the closure temporary, for maintenance, and on 8 September 2026 the mayor said it will not reopen before the end of the year (JPN). Tram 22, between Carmo and Batalha, returned on 1 August 2026. Porto’s historic trams has the lines and fares.
  • Works at São Bento: roadworks around the station and Praça da Liberdade continue until the Pink Line (Linha Rosa, from São Bento to Casa da Música) opens. Test running began in early October 2026, and the metro company is aiming for the end of March 2027 (ECO).
  • São João, 23 and 24 June: Livraria Lello and the Soares dos Reis are closed on the 24th; see the São João festival.

What is free, and for whom

Free things to do in Porto has the full list. The rules that catch visitors:

  • Always free: both decks of the Dom Luís I bridge, the hall of São Bento station, the Palácio de Cristal gardens and the viewpoints at Vitória and the Jardim do Morro. See the Dom Luís I bridge and Porto’s viewpoints.
  • Sundays: the municipal Museu do Porto sites are free, and otherwise €4 each. See Porto’s museums.
  • Not free for visitors from abroad: the Soares dos Reis’s free entries (52 a year) are for Portuguese citizens and residents, and so is Serralves’ free first Sunday.

The Porto Card

The Porto Card has been unavailable since the start of July 2026. Porto e Norte’s official booking page says it is temporarily unavailable for purchase while the product is restructured, and gives no date for its return. Sites with “Porto Card” in their address that still take orders are not the official seller. What a visitor can use instead:

  • Transport: the Andante Tour 1 ticket is €7.75 for 24 hours and the Tour 3 ticket €16.55 for 72 hours. Neither is valid on the historic trams.
  • Museums: the Sunday-free municipal museums, and the combined tickets above.
  • Trams: STCP sells its own tickets on board, from €6.

Porto tourist tax

Hotels and other accommodation charge €3 per person per night for up to 7 nights, so €21 at most, for guests aged 13 and over, and show it as a separate line on the bill. The rate has been €3 since 30 November 2024 (Câmara Municipal do Porto).

  • Vila Nova de Gaia, where the port lodges and the river quay are, charges €3 a night (since 22 August 2026), for up to 7 nights, to guests aged 16 and over (Público).
  • Matosinhos, for the seafood restaurants and the beaches, charges €2 a night (Observador).

The side of the river a hotel stands on decides which tax applies. A 14-year-old pays in Porto and not in Gaia.

Entry rules

Portugal is in the Schengen area, so one set of entry rules covers it and 28 other European countries. The EU’s Your Europe pages set the passport rules below; the EU’s ETIAS page lists UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens as visa-free.

Citizens ofVisaPassportOn arrival
UK, US, Canada or AustraliaNone for up to 90 days in any 180, counted across all Schengen countriesIssued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after you leavePhoto and fingerprints taken at your first entry for the Entry/Exit System, which has replaced passport stamps; it is free
EU countries, including IrelandNoneA valid passport or national ID cardNone; the Entry/Exit System covers non-EU citizens only

ETIAS, the EU’s online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors, is not yet required: applications are not open and the EU has not announced a start date. It says it will give several months’ notice on its ETIAS site. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at every external border crossing since 10 April 2026 (EU Entry/Exit System FAQ), so allow extra time at the border when you leave as well as when you arrive.

  • At Portuguese border control you may be asked for an onward or return ticket and proof that you have enough money for the visit (GOV.UK).
  • Children aged 17 and under travelling alone, or with an adult who is not their parent or guardian, need a signed and notarised letter of authorisation from a parent or guardian (GOV.UK).

Each government’s own advice for Portugal: UK, US, Canada and Australia.

Getting in from the airport

Porto airport to the city centre compares the options.

  • Metro line E (violet): from Aeroporto to Trindade, with trains every 20 to 30 minutes (ANA). A single is €2.30 (zone 4), plus €0.60 once for the paper Andante Azul card, so €2.90 for a first ride (Andante). At Trindade, change for the rest of the network.
  • Bus: STCP 601 and 602 run from Cordoaria, in the centre, to the airport, about every 25 minutes. A ticket bought on board is €2.50, for one journey (STCP).
  • Night bus 3M: from Avenida dos Aliados to the airport, hourly from 0:30 to 5:30.
  • Taxi or Uber: the taxi runs on the meter and the ride-hailing apps show their fare before you book.

Getting around

The old town is walkable and steep. Porto public transport has the rest.

TicketPrice
Single, 2 zones€1.40, on an Andante Azul card (€0.60)
Andante Tour 1, 24 hours€7.75
Andante Tour 3, 72 hours€16.55
STCP bus, bought on board€2.50
Historic tram, bought on board€6 one trip, €8 two trips on the same day, €12 for two days

The Andante Tour tickets cover the Metro, the buses and the CP trains inside the Andante zones, and are not valid on the trams or the funicular. A bank card or phone can pay at validators marked with the contactless logo at some stations, including São Bento, Aliados, Bolhão, Campanhã and Trindade, as a pilot: a zone 4 single at €2.30, capped at €7.75 a day (Andante).

Day trips

Day trips from Porto compares every trip by train, bus and tour. The train times are CP’s.

  • Guimarães: about 1 hour 15 minutes by CP urban train from São Bento or Campanhã.
  • Braga and Bom Jesus: about 1 hour 10 minutes by urban train.
  • Aveiro: about 1 hour 5 minutes from Campanhã. The northern line is under works, so check cp.pt for the day.
  • Coimbra: about 1 hour by Alfa Pendular to Coimbra-B.
  • The Douro Valley: the train to Pinhão takes 2 hours 15 minutes each way until 2 November 2026 and again from 25 March 2027. From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 there is no through train, because CP replaces the rail between Marco de Canaveses and Régua with buses, so a tour or a car is the practical way.
  • Lisbon: the Alfa Pendular takes about 2 hours 43 minutes, and a night in Porto beats a day trip from the other end. For the capital, start at what to book in Lisbon.

€15.95, for everyone, including people who only want to buy a book. The ticket is a voucher worth that amount towards a book from Livraria Lello's own imprint, and it is valid for up to 60 minutes after the time printed on it. It is non-refundable, and the date and time can be changed once, up to 24 hours before.

Is the Guindais funicular running?

No. It has been closed since 18 July 2026, and Porto's mayor told the council on 8 September that it will not reopen before the end of the year. The historic tram 22 returned on 1 August 2026.

Can I still buy the Porto Card?

No. The official page says it has been unavailable for purchase since the start of July 2026 while the product is restructured. The alternatives are the Andante Tour tickets for transport (€7.75 for 24 hours, €16.55 for 72) and the museums' own tickets, several of which are free on Sundays.

How much is the tourist tax in Porto?

€3 per person per night for up to 7 nights, so at most €21, for guests aged 13 and over. Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river, charges €3 a night, since 22 August 2026, for guests aged 16 and over, and Matosinhos charges €2. Your accommodation adds the tax to the bill.

Metro line E (violet) runs from the airport to Trindade, every 20 to 30 minutes. A single is €2.30, plus €0.60 once for the Andante Azul card. STCP buses 601 and 602 cost €2.50 on board, and the night bus 3M runs hourly from 0:30 to 5:30.

Do I need a visa or ETIAS for Porto?

Not for up to 90 days in any 180 if you hold a UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months after you leave. ETIAS is not yet required: applications are not open and the EU has not announced a start date.
