What to see

Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the tower and the museum together. Nicolau Nasoni, the Italian architect, designed the tower in 1753; it was built from 1754 and finished in July 1763, and the complex is a National Monument.

  1. The museum first or last. It is in the former rooms of the Brotherhood (1754 to 1758) and holds paintings, furniture, goldsmiths’ work, sculpture and textiles from the 13th to the 21st century. The Christus collection gathers works on the theme of Jesus Christ.
  2. The tower. Six floors and 225 steps to a height of 75 metres. The top looks over Porto and across the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia. The steps are narrow and there is no lift.
  3. The church. Part of the same 18th-century complex and the setting for Spiritus. Mass is at 17:00 on Saturdays, in English, and at 21:30 on Sundays.
