💡 The Short Version: The places named by the most of the 98 publishers counted are Casa Guedes (32 sources), the Mercado do Bolhão (28), Gazela (25), Café Santiago (24) and the Café Majestic (23). The Bolhão market is closed on Sundays, Café Santiago, Lado B and the Majestic too. The Michelin Guide Portugal 2026 puts ten starred restaurants in the municipality of Porto, and four more across the river and along the coast. Or book a tour: the Porto: 3-Hour Food Tourad is from €64 for 3 hours.

📊 The evidence behind this guide. Nothing here is ranked on one visit. This pass counts the restaurant, tasca, sandwich, market and bakery lists of 62 English, 30 Portuguese and 6 Brazilian publishers: newspapers, magazines, guidebooks and travel writers, among them Time Out, Condé Nast Traveller, Eater, Lonely Planet, Falstaff and Olive magazine in English, and NiT, Rica Vida, Guia Repsol, Dica de Portugal and MAGG in Portuguese. Porto-only sites without a named newsroom, tour operators and listing sites are not counted. Counts are publishers, not pages, and the English and Portuguese counts are shown apart. How the guides are made

⚠️ Check the day. The Bolhão market, Café Santiago, Lado B and the Café Majestic are closed on Sundays. Many family restaurants close for a few weeks in August and for days around Christmas, so ring ahead.

The places named by the most sources

The count is the number of publishers that name the place on a restaurant, tasca, sandwich, market or bakery list, with the split between English, Portuguese and Brazilian publishers (counted apart because their lists are written for Brazilian visitors). A place named by fewer than 14 is left out of this table. The lists use the name Casa Guedes for five houses and Brasão for six, and the count covers all of them.

The English lists lean on Manteigaria, Conga and the Café Majestic. The Portuguese lists lean on the starred rooms, the small francesinha houses and the tascas, among them Antiqvvm, Euskalduna Studio, Cozinha das Flores and Badalhoca, named by 4 to 6 Portuguese publishers and 1 to 4 English ones.

The Mercado do Bolhão

Rua Formosa · market Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, Saturday 08:00 to 18:00, closed Sunday · restaurants Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 00:00 · Cited by 28 sources (20 English, 5 Portuguese, 3 Brazilian) · mercadobolhao.pt

The market reopened in September 2022 after its rebuild. By its own count 126 of its 129 spaces were let in September 2026, and most stalls are in the hands of historic traders, in the operator’s words. The restaurants inside, by the operator’s list, are Nelson dos Leitões - Original da Bairrada, Culto ao Bacalhau (Michelin Selected), Peixe no Mercado, Herdade 1980, O Pintainho 36, Café da D. Gina and Casa Vegetariana. Manteigaria’s pastel de nata shop is beside the market, on Rua de Alexandre Braga.

Michelin’s release singled out Porto for four new one-star restaurants: dop, Éon, Gastro by Elemento and In Diferente. Six of the starred rooms are in hotels on where to stay in Porto: Blind at Torel Palace Porto, Le Monument at The One Monumental Palace, Éon at Palacete Severo, Vila Foz at Vila Foz Hotel & Spa, The Yeatman at the hotel of that name in Gaia and Vinha at Vinha Boutique Hotel. The Yeatman’s two tasting menus are €260 and €300 a person, according to its own site, and Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, Siza Vieira’s tea house on the rocks, serves lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Vinha’s dinner is Tuesday to Saturday, with children from 8 and a “casual chic” dress code.

Expresso’s Boa Cama Boa Mesa guide for 2026 gave Platinum Forks to Casa de Chá da Boa Nova and The Yeatman, and Gold Forks to Antiqvvm, Euskalduna Studio and Pedro Lemos. Antiqvvm’s chef Vítor Matos was its Chef of the Year.

Seafood in Matosinhos

The fish restaurants of Matosinhos are 7 to 8 km from the centre, on the Metro. At the Mercado de Matosinhos you choose and buy the fish at a stall, and a restaurant inside the market cooks it for €7.00 a person, with the sides charged separately, according to the restaurant’s own site. The streets of grill restaurants, Rua Heróis de França and Rua Roberto Ivens, are the other choice. O Gaveto, on Rua Roberto Ivens, is named by 14 sources and holds a Boa Cama Boa Mesa Silver Fork for 2026: see Matosinhos seafood.

Food tours

A food tour is a guided walk that stops to eat. GetYourGuide lists these Porto tours, with its “from” prices:

At the table

  • The bread on the table. A couvert of bread, butter, olives or cheese can be charged only if it is on the price list, and not if you did not ask for it and left it untouched. If you eat it, you pay. Tell the waiter to take away what you do not want (DECO PROteste).
  • Meal times. Lunch is about 12:00 to 15:00 and dinner 19:00 to 22:30 at the family restaurants, and several serve lunch only.
  • The francesinha is a lunch dish for most people. The houses that serve it list it first on their lunch menus.

Plan the rest

The sandwich with the sauce has its own page, the francesinha in Porto, and the fish is in Matosinhos seafood. For the bars with a view, see rooftop bars in Porto. To bake the tarts yourself, see pastel de nata classes in Porto, and for the tours that stop to eat, Porto food tours. Where to stay in Porto compares the areas, and hotels near Ribeira lists the hotels beside the tascas of the waterfront. To fit meals to the sights, see Porto in 2 days, and for the trips out, day trips from Porto. The port lodges across the river are in Porto’s port wine cellars.
