Before you book
- Across the river, the walk is over the bridge. The Rebello and Tivoli Kopke are 0.7 km from Praça da Ribeira in a straight line, but the walk is over the Dom Luís I bridge. The lower deck lands at river level and the upper deck, shared with Metro line D, is at the top of the hill.
- The climb out of Ribeira. The Guindais funicular between Ribeira and Batalha has been closed since 18 July 2026, and the mayor said on 8 September 2026 that it would not reopen before the end of the year. Tram 22 has run again between Carmo and Batalha since 1 August 2026: see Porto’s historic trams.
- The river floods. On 6 February 2026 the Douro flooded parts of Ribeira and Miragaia in Porto and Afurada in Gaia.
- The tourist tax is extra. A hotel on the Porto bank charges €3 a night, up to €21, to guests aged 13 and over. A Gaia hotel has charged €3 a night since 22 August 2026, to guests aged 16 and over, for up to 7 nights.
