What to book before you go

Prices are the adult rate in euros, from the operators. Buy from the operator: search results for the Basilica, the Campanile and the Doge’s Palace include sites with the sights’ names in their web addresses that say on their own pages they are independent or unofficial.

Does a pass pay back?

The Museum Pass costs €50 for twelve civic museums over six months, with no reservation. It does not cover the Basilica, the Campanile, the Accademia or the Peggy Guggenheim. Venice Museum Pass: is it worth it? has the sums.

  • For the Palace alone it loses. The Doge’s Palace is €35, so the pass costs €15 more.
  • With Ca’ Rezzonico it ties. The two cost €50 separately.
  • With a third museum it wins. Add Ca’ Pesaro at €15 and the separate tickets are €65.
  • Themed tickets are cheaper for one theme. The Museums of 18th-century Venice, the Museums of modern and contemporary art and the Island Museums are €20 each for three months.
  • A Basilica ticket is a small pass of its own. Within six months it also opens the paid spaces in the former Chorus churches, Torcello’s cathedral and the Salute sacristy.

Closed or changed

  • Ca’ d’Oro: the museum has been closed since 2 February 2026 for restoration and a new display, and the regional museums authority expects it to reopen in spring 2027. The Gothic front can still be seen from the Grand Canal.
  • San Giorgio Maggiore bell tower: temporarily closed for extraordinary maintenance, and the abbey’s site gives no reopening date. The basilica is open.
  • T Fondaco dei Tedeschi terrace: the free rooftop terrace by the Rialto has been closed since 1 May 2025, when the shopping centre shut.
  • Jewish Museum of Venice: the permanent exhibition is being renovated, and the museum says it will reopen in autumn. The synagogue tours run.
  • Mondays: the Accademia, Ca’ Pesaro, Palazzo Mocenigo, the Art Biennale and the Rialto fish market are closed. The Doge’s Palace, the Correr, Ca’ Rezzonico and the Peggy Guggenheim are open.
  • Tuesdays: Ca’ Rezzonico, the Fortuny Museum, the Peggy Guggenheim and Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana are closed.
  • Saturdays: the Ghetto is closed.
  • Sundays: the Basilica opens at 14:00, the Frari at 13:00 and San Rocco at 13:30. The free churches and the produce and fish markets are closed, and the Accademia is free on the first Sunday of the month.

Free things worth a line

  • The former Chorus churches are free from Monday to Saturday, 10:30 to 17:00. Four spaces inside them charge €3.50, and a Basilica ticket opens all four. See Venice churches.
  • The first Sunday of the month opens the Accademia free, with no booking and a queue. The next are 1 November and 6 December 2026, and 3 January 2027. Entry is free on 4 November 2026 too.
  • Always free: the Rialto Bridge, St Mark’s Square, the Riva degli Schiavoni and the Libreria Acqua Alta. Free things to do in Venice has the rest.

The access fee

No fee is charged to enter Venice now. In 2026 the Comune ran a trial from 3 April to 26 July, on 60 listed days: €5 if the code was bought by the fourth day before the visit, €10 after, for visitors over 14, in the old city and not on the lagoon islands. Overnight guests were exempt but registered. The Comune says the trial has ended and that later years are for its governing bodies, so no 2027 dates or price are fixed. Venice access fee has the detail.

Venice’s tourist tax

Hotels and rentals collect the imposta di soggiorno on top of the room price, per person per night, for up to 5 consecutive nights. Children under 10 are exempt and ages 10 to 16 pay half. January is 30% lower.

Entry rules for Italy

Italy is in the Schengen area, so the 90 days count across every Schengen country you visit.

The photo and fingerprints are the EU’s Entry/Exit System, which replaces passport stamps for non-EU visitors and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It costs nothing and needs nothing before you travel (EU). The ETIAS travel authorisation, a €20 online form for visa-free visitors, is not yet required: the EU says ETIAS is not in operation and will announce the start date several months ahead (ETIAS).

Italy has border checks on its land border with Slovenia from 19 June to 18 December 2026. Carry a passport or national ID card on any cross-border trip.

The rules above come from the UK, Canadian and Australian government travel pages, the EU’s passport rule for visa-free visitors and its guidance for EU citizens. For official safety advice, see the UK Foreign Office and US State Department pages for Italy. Pickpocketing in crowded places, trains and stations is the main crime risk they name.

Day trips

Day trips from Venice compares every trip by train, bus, boat and tour. The ones with something to know:

  • Murano, Burano and Torcello: line 12 from Fondamente Nove takes 9 minutes to Murano and about 41 to Burano, and Torcello needs line 9 from Burano. The Island Museums ticket is €20.
  • Padua: 26 to 28 minutes by fast train, and the Scrovegni Chapel is pre-booked online only.
  • Verona: 1 hour 12 minutes by Frecciarossa, with the Arena open by day.
  • The Dolomites: there is no train, so it is a tour or a car.
  • The Prosecco hills: the train to Conegliano takes 50 to 67 minutes, then a bus or a tour.

Food, drink and when to go

Where to eat in Venice lists the restaurants, and cicchetti and bacari says what to order at the small bars. Venice food tours and Venice walking tours set the guided options side by side. Best time to visit Venice gives the weather by month, with acqua alta, Venice Carnival 2027 and the Festa del Redentore for the dates that change a visit.

Other Italian cities

Florence is 2 hours 13 minutes from Venice Santa Lucia by Frecciarossa, and Rome is 3 hours 51 minutes to 3 hours 56 minutes. Fares move with the date and how early you book. Day trips from Florence has the Florence end of that train, and what to book before you go to Rome covers the capital.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

  • 1 May 2025: the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi shopping centre closed, and its free rooftop terrace with it.
  • 1 July 2025: St Mark’s Basilica began selling named, timed tickets online, and its ticket now also opens Torcello’s cathedral, the Salute sacristy and the Manfrediniana gallery.
  • 2025 to 2026: the churches of the Chorus network moved to free entry, so the Chorus Pass is not needed.
  • 2 February 2026: Ca’ d’Oro closed for restoration and a new display.
  • 3 April to 26 July 2026: the access-fee trial. No fee has been charged since 27 July.

  • 8 May to 21 November 2027: the Architecture Biennale.

The Secret Itineraries tour is reservation only. The Peggy Guggenheim and the Accademia are worth booking on busy days. The free churches and the Rialto need nothing.

How much are St Mark's Basilica tickets?

Yes, collected by your hotel for up to 5 consecutive nights: €1 to €5 per person per night in the historic centre, depending on stars. It is about 20% less on the Lido and the islands and 30% less on the mainland. Children under 10 are exempt and ages 10 to 16 pay half.

Do I need a visa or any other permit to enter Italy?

Not as a UK, US, Canadian, Australian or EU citizen. The first four can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa, on a passport valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. Visitors from outside the EU have their fingerprints and a photo taken at the border by the EU's Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. The ETIAS travel authorisation is not yet required.
