💡 The Short Version: Porto’s Metro, STCP buses and CP urban trains share one fare system, Andante, priced by zones: Z2 €1.40 for the centre, Z4 €2.30 for the airport, plus €0.60 for the paper Andante Azul card. Andante Tour is €7.75 for 24 hours or €16.55 for 72 hours, and it is not valid on the historic trams or the Guindais funicular, which has been closed since 18 July 2026. Tap in at the start of every journey and at every change. Contactless bank cards are a pilot, at marked validators only. The Porto Card has been unavailable since the start of July 2026. Day trips to Guimarães, Braga and Aveiro are CP tickets, not Andante: see day trips from Porto.

Tickets and prices

Andante is run by Transportes Metropolitanos do Porto, and its prices have been in force since 1 January 2026 (andante.pt). Buy the Andante Azul card at a machine or sales point for €0.60, valid for a year, then load it with trips. A single ticket covers rings of zones counted from the zone where you first validate, with a minimum of two, and it is valid for a set time from the first validation.

  • Buy ten identical singles and the eleventh is free.
  • Tour tickets are a separate non-rechargeable card, sold at Andante shops, the tourist office at the airport, CP ticket offices that sell Andante, municipal Andante points and Payshop agents. They cover the Metro, STCP buses and CP trains inside the Andante zones.
  • Children: under 4 travel free if they do not take a seat.
  • The sums. A Tour 1 at €7.75 covers the airport ride (€2.30) and three Z2 rides (€4.20) and then some, so it pays from the fifth ride, or sooner with a Gaia or Matosinhos beach run. Most visitors who stay in the centre and walk need only Z2 singles.

Porto airport to the city has the line E fare and the night bus.

Contactless bank cards: a pilot

A bank card or phone works as a ticket only at validators marked with the contactless logo, and only for people boarding at these places (andante.pt):

  • Metro line E (violet): Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música and Trindade.
  • Metro lines A, B, C, D and F: Campanhã, Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento and Aliados.
  • STCP line 500: Praça da Liberdade to Matosinhos Mercado.

Each journey is charged as a Z4 single, €2.30, valid for 1 hour 15 minutes on the Metro and STCP whatever the number of boardings, and four or more trips in a day are capped at €7.75, the price of a Tour 1. On 30 September 2026 the government announced a protocol among eight transport bodies for contactless payment across public transport in both metropolitan areas, with no start date given. Until it starts, buy an Andante ticket for any other station or bus.

Metro, buses and trains

  • Metro: six lines, A to F, with Trindade the main interchange. Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento, Aliados and Campanhã are the central stations. The Pink Line from São Bento to Casa da Música is expected to open at the end of March 2027, and works around São Bento and Praça da Liberdade continue until it does.
  • STCP buses are the city’s bus network, with the night routes listed on stcp.pt. The ticket on board is €2.50 for one journey, paid in cash, by MB WAY or by contactless card, and an Andante ticket also works.
  • São Bento station is the terminus for CP’s urban and regional trains to Guimarães, Braga, Aveiro and the Douro, and has no Alfa Pendular or Intercidades. Campanhã is the main station: every Alfa Pendular and Intercidades train stops there, and the Douro line starts there. An urban train takes 4 minutes between the two, for €1.65.
  • CP urban fares: €1.65 for 1 to 2 zones, €2.00 for 3, €2.25 for 4, €2.60 for 5, €2.95 for 6, €3.35 for 7 and €3.60 for 8, on CP’s own price list (cp.pt). That is the fare to Guimarães and Braga.
  • Validate: tap at the start of every journey and at every change of line or mode, from up to 10 minutes before departure, with the card out of your wallet. A red light means it failed. On CP trains you must hold a ticket before boarding, and the fine under Law 28/2006 is €120 to €350.

Trams and the Guindais funicular

STCP’s historic trams, the Porto Tram City Tour, run three lines and are outside Andante Tour. Tickets are sold on board only, adult €6 for one trip, €8 for two trips on the same day and €12 for two days, and child (4 to 12) €3.50 for one trip and €6 for two days. The Porto historic trams guide has the lines, the hours and the tickets.

The Guindais funicular, from the Ribeira up to Batalha, closed on 18 July 2026 and STCP’s page says it is temporarily closed for maintenance. It is not valid with Tour tickets in any case.

The Porto Card

The Porto Card, the city’s tourist pass, has been unavailable since the start of July 2026. The official booking page says the Porto.CARD “will be temporarily unavailable for purchase from the beginning of July due to a product restructuring process” and gives no date for a return. The version that was on sale had no public transport in it, and the card sold by a look-alike site is not the official one: the only seller is Porto e Norte’s own booking site.

What does the same jobs now:

  • Transport: Andante Tour 1 at €7.75 or Tour 3 at €16.55.
  • Museums: the municipal Museu do Porto sites are free on Sundays, and cost €4 each or €8 combined for seven consecutive days otherwise.
  • Attractions: each sight sells its own ticket, listed in what to book before you go to Porto.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis run on the meter, and Uber and Bolt show the fare in the app. For late nights, taxis, ride-hailing and the night buses take over once the Metro has stopped.

Before you go

Porto airport to the city centre covers the first ride, and where to stay in Porto says which areas are walkable and which are on a Metro line. Porto in 2 days plans the days, and Porto walking tours compares the guided walks, the tuk-tuk, the e-bike and the hop-on hop-off bus. The Dom Luís I bridge is free to walk, and Metro line D shares its upper deck.

Common questions

How do you buy a Metro ticket in Porto?

Buy the paper Andante Azul card for €0.60 at a machine, then load it with single trips by zone: Z2 €1.40, Z3 €1.85, Z4 €2.30, Z5 €2.80, Z6 €3.25. The card is valid for a year. Validate at the start of every journey and at every change.

What is the Andante Tour ticket?

A non-rechargeable card valid on the whole Andante network, which includes the Metro, STCP buses and CP trains inside the zones: Tour 1 is €7.75 for 24 consecutive hours and Tour 3 is €16.55 for 72 hours. Neither is valid on the historic trams or the Guindais funicular.

Is the Porto Card still sold?

No. The official page says the Porto.CARD will be temporarily unavailable for purchase from the beginning of July 2026 because of a product restructuring, and gives no relaunch date. The version that was on sale had no public transport in it. Andante Tour tickets cover the transport.

Can you pay for the Porto Metro with a bank card?

Only in a pilot, at validators marked with the contactless logo: Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música and Trindade on line E, Campanhã, Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento and Aliados on lines A, B, C, D and F, and STCP line 500. Each journey is charged as a Z4 single, €2.30, capped at €7.75 a day.

What happens if you travel without a validated ticket in Porto?

On CP trains the fine under Law 28/2006 is €120 to €350, and you must hold a ticket before boarding. Validation is compulsory on Andante: tap at the start of every journey and at every change, with the card out of your wallet.
