💡 The Short Version: For a first visit, stay in Baixa and Aliados, round São Bento station and Avenida dos Aliados. The Torre dos Clérigos is 0.34 km from São Bento station, Livraria Lello 0.39 km and Praça da Ribeira 0.57 km in a straight line, and Metro line D stops at São Bento and Aliados. Choose Ribeira for the river (no Metro, a steep climb out, and the Guindais funicular shut since 18 July 2026), Vila Nova de Gaia for the port lodges and the view back over the river, Cedofeita for galleries and quieter streets, and Foz do Douro or Matosinhos for the sea. The tourist tax depends on the river: €3 a night in Porto (up to €21), €3 in Gaia, €2 in Matosinhos. Or book a tour: the Porto: 3-Hour Guided City Highlights Walking Tourad is from €22 for 3 hours.

The areas, compared

Distances are straight lines from each hotel’s address to São Bento station, and the hills make every walk longer. There is no Metro to Ribeira, Miragaia or Foz.

  • The climb out of Ribeira. The waterfront is flat and every route to the rest of the centre climbs. The Guindais funicular between Ribeira and Batalha has been closed since 18 July 2026, and the mayor said on 8 September 2026 that it would not reopen before the end of the year. Andante Tour tickets are not valid on it. Tram 22 has run again between Carmo and Batalha since 1 August 2026: see Porto’s historic trams.
  • The river floods. On 6 February 2026 the Douro flooded parts of Miragaia and Ribeira in Porto and Afurada in Gaia. Ask a ground-floor hotel in those streets about winter.
  • Metro works. The Pink Line, from São Bento to Casa da Música, is due to open by March 2027, with test runs under way since 6 October 2026. Works round São Bento and Praça da Liberdade continue until it opens.
  • Check the address, not the area. Booking sites label inland suburbs “Vila Nova de Gaia”. The Gaia hotels on this page are on the quay and the hill, within 1.4 km of São Bento station, except Vinha, 3.0 km upriver.
  • Nights that fill the centre. São João on the night of 23 to 24 June 2027 closes the Baixa to traffic and stops the Metro crossing the bridge for part of the night: see São João in Porto. Common questions

What is the best area to stay in Porto for a first visit?

Baixa and Aliados, round São Bento station and Avenida dos Aliados. The Torre dos Clérigos is 0.34 km from São Bento station, Livraria Lello 0.39 km and Praça da Ribeira 0.57 km in a straight line, and Metro line D stops at São Bento and Aliados. Ribeira is the choice for the river, with a steep climb out.

Is there a tourist tax in Porto?

Yes, and the river decides which. Porto charges €3 a night, up to €21 for 7 nights, for guests aged 13 and over. Vila Nova de Gaia has charged €3 a night since 22 August 2026, for guests aged 16 and over and up to 7 nights. Matosinhos charges €2 a night. The hotel collects it and shows it separately on the bill.

Is it better to stay in Ribeira or Baixa?

Baixa for the sights and the Metro, Ribeira for the river. The Ribeira hotels below are 0.54 to 0.74 km from São Bento station, and the way up from the waterfront is steep; the Guindais funicular between Ribeira and Batalha has been closed since 18 July 2026. There is no Metro station in Ribeira.

Should I stay in Porto or in Vila Nova de Gaia?

Stay in Gaia for the port lodges and the view of Porto across the river. The Gaia hotels on the quay and the hill are 0.76 to 1.4 km from São Bento station in a straight line, but you cross the Dom Luís I bridge to reach the sights, and the hotel charges Gaia's tourist tax, not Porto's.

Which area is best for the beach in Porto?

Foz do Douro, where the river meets the sea, or Matosinhos, which has its own Metro stations and the fish restaurants. Foz has no Metro; tram 1 and bus 500 serve it. The hotels below in Foz are 5.5 to 6.4 km from São Bento station and the Matosinhos ones 7.0 to 8.1 km.

How do I get from Porto airport to my hotel?

Metro line E runs from the airport to Trindade, in the centre. A Z4 single is €2.30, plus €0.60 for the paper card on a first ride. From Trindade, Baixa and Bolhão are a short walk, and Ribeira and Gaia are a taxi or a steep walk away.
