💡 The Short Version: Every visitor buys a €15.95 ticket-voucher, even to buy a book, from tickets.livrarialello.pt. It is a credit against a book, valid for up to 60 minutes after the time on it, and non-refundable: the date and time can be changed once, up to 24 hours before. It is open daily, 9:00 to 19:30, and closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. J.K. Rowling has said she never visited the shop. Or book a tour: the walking tour with Livraria Lelload is from €36 (GetYourGuide), and the guide is what you pay for.
The tickets, compared
Prices are the shop’s own, from tickets.livrarialello.pt. The shop’s web address is reached from livrarialello.pt; sites with the bookshop’s name in their address are resellers. GetYourGuide prices are its lowest “from” prices.

- A voucher is required to get in, including to buy a book. Lello has used the voucher system since 2015, and the full value of the ticket can be spent on a book.
- The credit. The ticket page calls the voucher a credit towards a book from Livraria Lello Editions, and the FAQ says its value is deducted from your book purchase.
- Priority entry is for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with infants, and Amigo Card holders.
- No stand-alone ticket on GetYourGuide. The three walking tours below charge for a guide.
How to buy
- Online, before your visit. The voucher is emailed to you and shown on your phone at the door; Lello does not post vouchers.
- In the queue, on your phone, if you have not bought one. Staff help with the process. Cash is not accepted for a voucher bought this way.
- The same day, up to 30 minutes before closing, subject to availability, which the product page shows.
- Changes. The date and time can be changed once, up to 24 hours before the slot, from the link in the confirmation email. Missing your slot loses the voucher.
- At the shop, payment is by cash, Multibanco, Visa or MB WAY.
Tours worth paying for
Lello sells a guided visit only of the Gema Room (€100), so a tour adds the city around the shop. Prices are GetYourGuide’s lowest “from” prices, per person.

What to see
Allow 30 to 40 minutes inside; the tours stop for 30 to 40. The building opened on 13 January 1906, designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves in neo-Gothic style.

- The façade. Two figures painted by Joseph Bielmann stand for Art and Science. Look before you go in.
- The ground floor. Busts of Portuguese writers line the columns, and railway tracks and a trolley (a replica) recall how books were carried up from the basement warehouse until the early 1990s.
- The staircase. One of the first concrete staircases in Portugal, finished to look like carved wood with painted stucco. It was painted red by mistake during the restoration of 1993, and the colour stayed.
- The skylight. A stained-glass ceiling by the Dutch artist Samuel Van Krieken, inscribed Decus in Labore, “dignity in work”. The 2018 restoration added a smiley face; Lello invites you to find it.
- The Manifesto Library. A library of 100 titles that opened on 27 June 2026 in partnership with Dua Lipa’s Service95 book club, among the new spaces designed by Álvaro Siza. The €15.95 voucher covers it.

What to skip: the Gema Room, unless you collect rare books. The €100 guided tour shows first editions and personal collections, among them Amy Winehouse’s library, and its voucher is redeemable against special editions. The A4 exhibition by Ai Weiwei has its own €8 ticket.
Harry Potter
The shop is often linked to Hogwarts. What each side has said:
- J.K. Rowling lived in Porto in the early 1990s. On 21 May 2020 she tweeted that she had never visited the bookshop, never knew of its existence, and that it has nothing to do with Hogwarts. She added that she wrote in the Majestic Café on Rua de Santa Catarina (Observador, 21 May 2020).
- Livraria Lello makes no Harry Potter claim on its own pages. The only mention is that its 2019 public takeover bid for books bought a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Lello’s history).
The Fundação Livraria Lello
The Combo adds the Fundação, in the Leça do Balio monastery in Matosinhos, on the Camino de Santiago. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:30, and the shop estimates 90 to 120 minutes there, including Álvaro Siza’s open sculpture and a short walk by the Leça river. For lunch in Matosinhos afterwards, see Matosinhos seafood.
