Donation-based walks
Venice Free Walking Tour
Donation · 10:00 and 11:00 daily · English · booking mandatory
Venice Free Walking Tour runs two tours every day on its own site. At 10:00 “Hidden Venice: Secrets and Stories” meets at the old well in Campo della Maddalena, with a guide carrying a red flag, and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes through Cannaregio, past the Rioba and Moor statues and the church of Madonna dell’Orto, ending in Campo del Ghetto Novo. At 11:00 “Venice through the centuries North” meets at the old well in Campo SS Apostoli and takes about 2½ hours through eastern Cannaregio and western Castello, ending near the start. The nearest vaporetto stop to both is Ca’ d’Oro, 3 to 5 minutes’ walk away. You decide what the tour is worth at the end. The day tours do not include St Mark’s Square or the Rialto Bridge. Groups of 6 or more must contact the organisers before reserving (venicefreewalkingtour.com).
Venice’s municipal regulations prohibit loudspeakers for guides, so the 11:00 tour uses radio transmitters and earphones that the organisers provide.

Common questions
Are the free walking tours in Venice really free?
They run on donations: you pay the guide what you think the tour was worth at the end. Venice Free Walking Tour runs two English tours every day, at 10:00 from Campo della Maddalena and at 11:00 from Campo SS Apostoli, and online booking is mandatory. GuruWalk lists more tip-based walks by independent guides.
How much is a walking tour in Venice?
City highlights walks start at €24 for 2 hours and €25 for another 2-hour walk, a St Mark's to Rialto walk with a Spritz is €27, a sunset crime walk €39 and a Commissario Brunetti walk €133. These are GetYourGuide's lowest 'from' prices for one adult.
Do Venice walking tours go inside St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace?
Only the ones that say so. The city walks of €24 to €27 are outdoors and list no entry tickets. A guided Basilica and Doge's Palace tour with pre-reserved tickets is from €72 for 3 hours, and a tour with the Secret Itineraries is from €109.
Can guides in Venice use loudspeakers?
No. Venice's municipal regulations prohibit loudspeakers for tour guides, so groups use radio transmitters and earphones.
Do walking tours cover St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge?
The paid city walks do and end in St Mark's Square or at the Rialto. Venice Free Walking Tour's day tours do not include St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge; only its night tour does.
