The Venice access fee: nothing to pay now, what the 2026 trial was, who was exempt and the tourist tax overnight guests pay

Venice's day-visitor access fee is not charged now: the 2026 trial ended on 26 July 2026 and nothing is decided for 2027. The trial was €5 or €10 on 60 listed days for visitors aged 14 and over to the old city; overnight guests were exempt and pay the tourist tax instead.

💡 The Short Version: No access fee is payable in Venice now. The Comune says the 2026 trial ended on 26 July 2026 and that from 27 July the fee is no longer in effect. No 2027 dates or price are fixed; the city’s governing bodies decide. In 2026 the fee was €5 if bought by the fourth day before, €10 after, for everyone aged 14 and over, on 60 listed days from 3 April to 26 July, 08:30 to 16:00, in the old city only. Overnight guests were exempt and pay the tourist tax of €1 to €5 a person a night in the old city instead. The code came from the Comune’s own channels; sites that sell an “access pass” under other domains are not the Comune.

What is in force now

Nothing. The Comune’s access-fee site says: the trial period for the access fee in 2026 has ended, so from 27 July the fee is no longer in effect and Venice can be visited without any payment or request for an exemption. Asked whether the fee will be charged in 2027, its FAQ says the governing bodies of the Municipality of Venice are responsible for approving further measures. No date, price or rule for 2027 or later has been published (cda.ve.it).

Where it applied

The fee covered the old city. The minor islands (the Lido, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo and others) were outside it, and so were the cruise landing stages on Riva degli Schiavoni. The areas of the Ponte della Libertà, Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia, San Basilio, Tronchetto and the Marittima were not charged for anyone who did not go on into the old city. A day on Murano, Burano and Torcello needed no code.

The tourist tax, which overnight guests pay

The tourist tax is set by the Comune and is separate from the access fee. It is charged per person per night, the host collects it, and it stops after 5 consecutive nights. Under-10s are exempt and ages 10 to 16 pay half. High season runs from 1 February to 31 December, and January is 30% lower. These are the Comune’s rates from 1 April 2025.

If it returns

Check the Comune’s access-fee site, cda.ve.it, for the dates, the price and the hours. The official payment portal is cda.veneziaunica.it, reached from cda.ve.it. Sites that sell a “Venice access pass” or a “day tripper pass” under their own domains sell nothing the Comune does not.

What to book before you go to Venice lists the tickets and the entry rules. Day trips from Venice leave from Santa Lucia, which was outside the 2026 fee for anyone not entering the old city. Venice public transport covers the station and the boats, airport to the city the way in, and the best time to visit Venice the month.
