  • Validate. Tap the ticket at the start of each journey and at each change of vehicle: at the landing-stage validators, on buses and trams, and at the People Mover gates (actv.avmspa.it).
  • Passes run from the first validation. The 24-hour ticket and the longer ones count their hours from it.
  • On board. A ticket bought on a boat is paid for by card or phone, never cash, and handed over validated.
  • Children. Under 6 travel free.
  • Not covered. Lines 16 and 19, the Casino line and Alilaguna need their own tickets.

You can tap a physical or phone-based Visa, Mastercard, Maestro or American Express card on the validators across the boats, buses, tram and People Mover. On the mainland buses and the Aerobus you also tap out. Buy a 75-minute ticket or a pass when you want a fixed fare for the day.

Tickets are sold by Venezia Unica offices, authorised sellers such as tobacconists, machines at the main terminals and landing stages, the AVM Venezia app, WhatsApp, veneziaunica.it and on board. A ticket bought online is a voucher that you exchange at a machine by entering the booking code. Sites that sell “vaporetto tickets” under other domains are resellers, not ACTV.

The People Mover

€1.50 · Piazzale Roma, the cruise terminals and Tronchetto

The People Mover is an automated railway. AVM says that from Tronchetto you are in the centre in 4 minutes (avm.avmspa.it); Venezia Terminal Passeggeri puts the cruise terminals 3 minutes from Piazzale Roma. The €1.50 single covers 75 minutes and works on the mainland buses and trams too. Any vaporetto ticket of 75 minutes or longer covers it too. See the cruise port section of airport to the city.

Traghetti and water taxis

A traghetto is a gondola ferry across the Grand Canal for €2; the gondola guide has the fares for a full ride.

Licensed water taxis wait at stands and carry no fare listed here: agree the fare before you board, and for the airport see the water taxi options.

Luggage

Each ACTV ticket from 75 minutes up includes three pieces of luggage whose three dimensions together do not exceed 150 cm. Alilaguna allows one heavy bag and one hand luggage, with extra bags €4 each. The ATVO coach has no limit. Santa Lucia has a left-luggage office, the KiPoint, along platform 1, open 07:00 to 23:00, from €6 (kibag.it). Cooperativa Trasbagagli moves luggage by boat, with desks at Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto and outside Santa Lucia from 07:00 to 20:00 (trasbagagli.it).

Santa Lucia and Mestre

Santa Lucia is the station on the Grand Canal in the old city: the Ferrovia vaporetto stop is outside, and Piazzale Roma is across the Calatrava bridge. Mestre is on the mainland. The train from Mestre to Santa Lucia takes 10 to 13 minutes from €1.50, and the 24-hour ticket covers it. On a weekday in October trains leave Mestre for Santa Lucia through the evening until at least 23:40, and the last from Santa Lucia to Mestre is at 00:13, with the next at 05:01. Hotels in Mestre are charged the mainland rate of the tourist tax, 30% less than the old city’s.

Common questions

How much is a vaporetto ticket in Venice?

€9.50 for 75 minutes, €25 for 24 hours, €35 for 48 hours, €45 for 72 hours and €65 for 7 days. They are ACTV's fares, sold by Venezia Unica, and are valid on the vaporetti, the People Mover, the mainland buses and tram and the Lido buses. Children under 6 travel free.

Can I pay for a vaporetto with a bank card?

Yes. A physical or phone-based Visa, Mastercard, Maestro or American Express card can be tapped on the validators across ACTV's boats, buses, tram and People Mover. On the mainland buses and the Aerobus you also tap out. Tickets bought on a vessel are paid for by card or phone only; cash is not accepted.

Do I have to validate a vaporetto ticket?

Yes, at the start of each journey and each change of vehicle, at the validators on the landing stages, on board buses and trams, and at the People Mover gates. A ticket bought on board a boat is handed over already validated.

Does the 24-hour ticket cover trains?

Yes, regional and fast regional trains within Venice's municipality: Santa Lucia, Porto Marghera, Mestre, Carpenedo and Mestre Ospedale. A Mestre to Santa Lucia train is from €1.50 without it.

How much is the People Mover?

€1.50 for a 75-minute single, which also works on the mainland buses and trams but not on the vaporetti. The People Mover links Piazzale Roma, the cruise terminals and Tronchetto.
