Marrakech hammams: public baths against spa hammams, what each costs and what to bring

A Marrakech hammam costs about 10 MAD in a neighbourhood bath (Lonely Planet's figure, plus 50 to 100 MAD for a scrub), 500 to 1,000 MAD at Hammam de la Rose, and £32 to £76 for a GetYourGuide hammam and massage with hotel transfer. What to bring, what to wear and the Ramadan hours.

💡 The Short Version: A neighbourhood hammam is the cheapest and the most local: Lonely Planet gives about 10 MAD to go in, plus 50 to 100 MAD to be scrubbed, and you bring your own mitt, soap and towel. A spa hammam gives you a private room and an attendant: Hammam de la Rose charges 500 to 1,000 MAD (about £38 to £76). A GetYourGuide package with a scrub, a massage and hotel transfer is £32.05 to £78.35 for 2 to 3 hours. Wear underwear; in a public hammam men and women go at separate times. Prices move, so check them when you book.

Public hammam or spa hammam

A hammam is a Moroccan bathhouse: a hot steam room where an attendant pours warm water over you, soaps you with savon noir, a black soap made with olive oil, and scrubs you with a glove, the kessa. Hammams are segregated by gender. Lonely Planet’s figures below date from its 2017 guide to hammams in Marrakech.

A public hammam

About 10 MAD · scrub 50 to 100 MAD extra · bring your own kit

Lonely Planet calls Hammam Mouassine, in operation since the 16th century, the oldest hammam in Marrakech and one of the most authentic. It has three tadelakt-plastered rooms of different temperatures with water nozzles along the wall that fill your bucket, and no treatment areas. Entry starts at 10 MAD, and you stake a section of the floor and scrub yourself or pay 50 to 100 MAD for an attendant. Smaller neighbourhood hammams alternate opening times for men and women, and Lonely Planet advises asking your riad or hotel to find the nearest one, because they have no names or addresses.

  • Wear underwear. You strip to it in a changing room. Some private hammams provide disposable underwear.
  • A swimsuit is allowed, but the attendant will probably move it for the full-body scrub.
  • The scrub is firm. The attendant soaks you in black soap for a few minutes, rinses you and then scrubs off the dead skin with the glove; afterwards you wash off with soap and shampoo.
  • Choose one close to your riad, so you can walk back relaxed. Ask the riad: it will often arrange the kit and the nearest public hammam.
  • Ramadan. Hammam de la Rose lists hours of 10:00 to 17:00. See best time to visit Marrakech.

Common questions

How much is a hammam in Marrakech?

Lonely Planet gives about 10 MAD for a neighbourhood hammam, with an extra 50 to 100 MAD to pay an attendant to scrub you; those figures date from 2017. Hammam de la Rose charges 500 MAD for 50 minutes up to 1,000 MAD for 1 hour 50, and GetYourGuide's hammam and massage packages run from £32.05 for 2 hours to £78.35 for 3 hours with hotel transfer.

What should I bring to a public hammam?

Lonely Planet lists a small bowl to scoop water, a kessa (scrubbing mitt), savon noir (black soap made with olive oil), your own shampoo and toiletries, a plastic mat for the floor, a change of clothes and a towel. Nothing is provided in a neighbourhood hammam. A private hammam needs only a change of clothes.

What do you wear in a Marrakech hammam?

Underwear. Lonely Planet says some private hammams provide disposable underwear. You can wear a swimsuit, but the attendant will probably move it for the full-body scrub.

Can men and women go to a hammam together?

Not in a public hammam: men and women have separate days or times. In a private hammam you are usually alone with the attendant, and Les Bains de Marrakech has double massage cabins and duo baths for couples, family or friends.

Are hammams open during Ramadan?

Hammam de la Rose lists Ramadan opening hours of 10:00 to 17:00. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on or around 8 February 2027.
