💡 The Short Version: Most day trips from Marrakech are 7 to 12 hours of which half is driving. The nearest are the Ourika Valley (about 60 km) and the Agafay Desert (40 to 50 minutes). Essaouira is about 3 hours each way, Ouzoud Falls 150 km, and Aït Benhaddou 3 to 4 hours over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Zagora and Merzouga are 2 and 3 day tours, and Toubkal is a two-day climb. Or book a tour: a group tour from about £11 (most-booked trips run £11 to £18) buys the pick-up from your riad, the driver and the stops, and saves the cost of a car or a negotiated taxi for 150 km. GetYourGuide’s Agafay quad, camel and dinner show tourad is rated 4.8 from 44,775 reviews, the Ouzoud Falls guided hike, boat ride and lunchad 4.6 from 40,105, and the Ourika Waterfalls tour with guidead 4.9 from 25,302. Prices vary by option and date; the checkout shows the total (GetYourGuide).
The trips compared

Tours worth booking
A tour pays where the distance is long or the package is the product.
- Ouzoud Falls, Aït Benhaddou and the Sahara. Each is 150 km or more from the city, so a car and driver cost more than the tour. Read the options: the cheapest Ouzoud option has no guide and no boat, and the Aït Benhaddou studio entry and lunch are extra.
- Agafay. One price covers the transfer, a quad, a camel ride, dinner and a fire show, and the evening is hard to assemble yourself.
- Ourika. The guide and the waterfall hike are what you are paying for; lunch is extra.
- Not worth a tour: Essaouira if you want the evening or a night, where the coach is cheaper and more flexible; Casablanca by train; and the ANIMA garden, which has a free shuttle.
The trips
Ourika Valley
About 60 km · 7 to 8 hours · tour from £11.40
The valley runs into the High Atlas, and the tours end at Setti Fatma for a waterfall walk and a lunch by the river. Cafés there were reported in August 2025 to charge for the river bank, so agree prices before you sit. The Ourika Valley guide has the tours and the ANIMA garden shuttle.

Imlil and the Atlas villages
64 km · 7 to 9 hours · tour from £8.71 to £18.99
A trekking village at 1,740 m with walks through Berber villages and lunch in a family house. Toubkal, at 4,167 m, is a two-day guided climb from about £85, not a day trip. The Imlil guide has the tours and the state of the valley after the 2023 earthquake.
Agafay Desert
40 to 50 minutes · 6 to 7 hours · tour from £7.91 to £20.18
A stony plateau, not dunes, with sunset tours that combine a quad, a camel ride, dinner and a show. Alcohol is extra, and the quad is usually shared by two. The Agafay guide has the dinner shows, the quad safety line and the camel checklist.
Essaouira
About 175 km · 10 to 12 hours · tour from £10.60 · coach about 90 to 110 MAD
A walled Atlantic port, with 4 to 5 hours in town on a tour. The guide and lunch are extra on the big tours. The Essaouira guide compares the coach and the tours.

Ouzoud Falls
150 km · 11 to 12 hours · tour from £13.63
A gorge of waterfalls about 110 m high, with a boat ride and Barbary macaques. The Ouzoud guide explains the four options.
Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate
3 to 4 hours each way · 10 to 12 hours · tour from £17.41
A UNESCO-listed earthen village on a former caravan route. A two-day tour to Zagora passes it on day 1. The Aït Benhaddou guide covers the pass, the Atlas Studios entry and the overnight alternative.

Casablanca
About 2 hours 40 minutes by train · tour from £21.60 to £22.95
The Hassan II Mosque is visited by guided tour. The Fondation Hassan II lists visits at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00 and 14:00 from Saturday to Thursday, and at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00 and 14:00 on Friday. Foreign adults pay 140 MAD (£10.70), children from 6 and Moroccan students 30 MAD, and a private visit for 10 or fewer is 2,200 MAD. Clothes must cover the shoulders, chest and knees, shoes come off, and there is no smoking, eating or drinking (Fondation Hassan II). A train takes about 2 hours 40 minutes for roughly £7 to £16 (Rome2rio); a mosque ticket is on top. GetYourGuide’s Casablanca tour with Hassan II Mosque visitad (4.7 stars from 5,762 reviews, from £22.95) and Casablanca day tour and mosque visitad (4.8 from 3,294, from £21.60) are the tours; check whether the mosque ticket is in the price.

Common questions
What is the easiest day trip from Marrakech?
The Ourika Valley, about 60 km away, with a 7 to 8 hour group tour from about £11, or the Agafay Desert, 40 to 50 minutes from the city, for a sunset dinner tour of 6 to 7 hours from about £8 to £20. Both are shorter drives than Essaouira, Ouzoud or Aït Benhaddou.
Can you do the Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?
No. Zagora is a 2-day tour from about £53 and Merzouga, at the Erg Chebbi dunes, a 3-day tour from about £92; both are mostly driving. The Agafay Desert is a stony plateau near the city, not dunes.
Can you climb Toubkal in a day from Marrakech?
No. The summit is 4,167 m and the usual route is two days with a night in a refuge, from about £85 on a guided trek. A day tour reaches Imlil, the trekking village at the start, 64 km from the city.
Is it better to take a tour or go on your own?
A tour is worth it for Ouzoud, Aït Benhaddou, the Agafay dinner shows and the Sahara, where the distance or the package makes it cheaper than a car. The coach to Essaouira and the train to Casablanca are cheaper on your own, and the ANIMA garden has a free shuttle.
