The tours

Day trip to Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou

4.7 stars from 11,107 reviews · 11 hours · from £17.41 (list £20.50)

An air-conditioned van with Wi-Fi from a Marrakech pick-up between 07:00 and 08:00: a break at Aït Barka, the Tizi n’Tichka pass, about 80 minutes at the Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate, and 2 hours at Aït Benhaddou with lunch, then about 3 hours back. The tourad includes a guide in the kasbah, liability insurance and the pass crossing; the 13 euro studio entry, lunch and personal expenses are not included. The operator warns that road works may make the trip take longer than planned, and that it is not recommended for anyone with mobility difficulties who wants to visit the kasbah. The operator calls the evening before to confirm the pick-up.

Guided day trip with Taourirt kasbah

4.8 stars from 5,939 reviews · 12 hours · from £16.62 (list £27.70)

The 12-hour tourad adds Taourirt kasbah in Ouarzazate and the area around the cinema museum, and spends 2.5 hours at Aït Benhaddou with a guide in the kasbah. It makes the studios optional. The operator says the studios are run by the municipality of Ouarzazate and use their own guides, so the tour’s guides cannot accompany you inside; the guides inside may ask for tips, which are not mandatory, since the entry fee is paid at the door. Lunch is optional and tickets and refreshments are not included. Wheelchair users and people with back problems are advised against it.

Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou and Atlas Studios

4.7 stars from 1,507 reviews · 10 to 11 hours · from £19.63 (list £27.62)

This tourad puts a guided studio visit of about 2 hours ahead of 2 hours at Aït Benhaddou, with the entry of 13 euros per person paid in cash at the studio. A guide in the kasbah comes with option 2 only. Lunch is not included, and you choose any restaurant in Aït Benhaddou. If a snow closure on the High Atlas road makes the crossing unsafe, the trip may be rescheduled or refunded.

What to see

  • The Tizi n’Tichka pass. 2,260 m. The road over the High Atlas, with a photo stop at the top. The tours also stop near Aït Barka for breakfast or a break.
  • Aït Benhaddou. 2 to 2.5 hours on the tours. A fortified village of earthen buildings, dating from the 17th century, on the trade route that linked Sudan and Marrakech through the Draa valley. Many of its houses are now galleries and shops, and the national conservation centre, CERKAS, looks after it (Ouarzazate tourism). It has been a film location for productions including Gladiator and Game of Thrones, according to the tour pages. The village sits on a hill with open views over the Ounila valley.
  • Taourirt kasbah. 30 minutes, optional on the 12-hour tour. In the centre of Ouarzazate.
  • Atlas Studios. 80 minutes to 2 hours, 13 euros. The film studios in Ouarzazate, with sets. Skip it if you would rather have the time at the village: it takes 80 minutes to 2 hours of a day that is already 11.
  • Lunch. The tours stop at a restaurant with panoramic views. It is not in the price.

Day trip or overnight

A day trip means 6 to 8 hours of driving for 2 to 2.5 hours at the village. The 2-day Sahara tour to Zagora and Aït Benhaddouad (4.5 stars from 2,328 reviews, from £53.30) passes the village on its first day, and the Sahara desert tours from Marrakech page compares it with the three-day tour to Merzouga. On your own, a grand taxi hired at the Bab Doukkala bus station takes you straight to Aït Benhaddou, or a coach to Ouarzazate on the N9 drops you at the village of Tabouraht, 30 km before the town, for a local taxi or minibus; the regional tourism site gives 4 to 6 hours from Marrakech. That is a night away, not a day.

Practical information

  • Winter. The road over the High Atlas can close in snow, and the tour may then be rescheduled or refunded.
  • Cash. The studio entry is paid in cash at the door. Bring cash for lunch, and for the kasbah: the 2-day Zagora tourad lists entry to Aït Benhaddou at 3 euros as not included.
  • Walking. One tour does not recommend the kasbah visit for people with mobility difficulties, and another advises against it for wheelchair users and people with back problems.
  • The one thing that ruins the day. Expecting the price to cover the studios and lunch: both are extra.

Common questions

Can you do Aït Benhaddou as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, on a tour of 10 to 12 hours with pick-up between 07:00 and 08:00 and 3 to 4 hours of driving each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. A two-day tour that passes Aït Benhaddou on its way to Zagora is the less rushed way to see it.

Does the Aït Benhaddou tour include the Atlas Studios entry?

No. The studio entry is 13 euros a person, paid in cash at the entrance, and on one tour the studio visit is optional. The operators say the studios use their own guides, who may ask for tips that are not obligatory.

Is lunch included on the Aït Benhaddou day trip?

Not on the main tours. Lunch is an extra you buy at a restaurant in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, with panoramic views on the tours that stop at one.

How do you get to Aït Benhaddou without a tour?

Hire a grand taxi at Bab Doukkala bus station for the trip direct, or take a coach to Ouarzazate on the N9 and get off at the village of Tabouraht, then a local taxi or minibus. The regional tourism site gives 4 to 6 hours each way.
