💡 The Short Version: Morning: the Sagrada Família at 9:00 (10:30 on Sundays), then a metro ride to Passeig de Gràcia for Casa Batlló or La Pedrera. Midday: walk down to La Rambla and the Boqueria market for lunch. Afternoon: the Gothic Quarter and the cathedral, or the Picasso Museum. Evening: Montjuïc by funicular and cable car, or a sunset sail from the port. Book one thing before you fly: the Sagrada Família (€26, on sale roughly two months ahead, in your name, and late arrivals are refused). The Picasso Museum is closed on Mondays. Or book a tour: the Sagrada Família skip-the-line guided tourad is from £40.28 and had dates when the plain entry ticket did not, and a tapas walkad from £48.08 covers the evening. For the metro, a T-casual gives one person 10 journeys for €13.

What changes by day, season or ship

  • On a Sunday, the basilica opens at 10:30, the cathedral’s tourist visit runs only from 14:00 to 17:00, and the Boqueria is closed. Book the basilica for 10:30, do the Gaudí house before lunch, lunch in the old town, and be at the cathedral by 14:00.
  • On a Monday, the Picasso Museum is closed. Use the cathedral in the afternoon.
  • In winter, the Sagrada Família closes at 18:00 from November to February, the cable car at 18:00 in November and December, and the funicular at 20:00 from 26 October: the evening on Montjuïc becomes a late afternoon.
  • From a ship, allow time to be back at the terminal; the cruise port to the city centre has the bus and the taxi fares.

The plan

9:00 The Sagrada Família

Carrer de Mallorca 401 · opens 9:00, 10:30 on Sundays · €26 with the audio-guide app · about 1 hour

Book the 9:00 slot, the quietest hour, and bring earphones for the audio guide, which is in the official app. Entry is only at the time on your ticket, so do not be late. Bring photo ID matching the name on the ticket, wear shorts and skirts no shorter than mid-thigh, and leave the rucksack behind: bags are searched and there are no lockers for luggage. A tower adds €10 and about half an hour. If the date has gone, a guided tour that includes entry, sold by a reseller, often still has space. Sagrada Família tickets compares them.

10:45 Casa Batlló or La Pedrera

Passeig de Gràcia 43 and 92 · both from €29 · metro L2, L3, L4 Passeig de Gràcia

From the basilica take metro L2 to Passeig de Gràcia. Pick one house; Casa Batlló or La Pedrera compares them ticket by ticket:

  • Casa Batlló: the house Gaudí remodelled from 1904 to 1906. The general visit takes 1 hour 15 with an audio guide, first entry 9:00 and last 19:45; booking ahead saves up to €15 a person.
  • La Pedrera (Casa Milà): the block of flats round two courtyards, with a rooftop of 29 chimneys. The daytime visit runs 9:00 to 17:30 from €29, and the rooftop closes in rain.

The other house is worth a look from the pavement as you walk on down Passeig de Gràcia.

12:30 La Rambla and the Boqueria

Metro L3 Liceu · the Boqueria is closed on Sundays and public holidays

Walk down Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça de Catalunya and on to La Rambla for the Boqueria market and a lunch of tapas at a stall or a bar. For a guided lunch, a tapas walking tourad (from £48.08, 4.8 stars from 5,400 reviews, 3 hours) does four food stops in the Gothic Quarter with a guide; food tours compared has the others, and where to eat in Barcelona names the tapas bars and restaurants worth a table.

14:30 The Gothic Quarter and the cathedral

Weekdays 9:30 to 18:30, last entry 17:45 · Saturdays to 17:15 · Sundays 14:00 to 17:00 · €16 · metro L4 Jaume I

Inside the Gothic cathedral, the cloister keeps 13 white geese round its pond, and a lift goes up to the roof and the bell towers (catedralbcn.org, 30 September 2026). Buy tickets for the tourist visit at tickets.catedralbcn.org.

16:30 The Picasso Museum, or straight on to Montjuïc

Carrer de Montcada 15–23, El Born · Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 19:00 until 29 March 2027 · €12 online · closed Mondays

The museum is about 400 m east of the cathedral and holds more than 4,000 works (museupicassobcn.cat, 30 September 2026). Book online: the ticket office closes 30 minutes before the museum, and capacity is limited. If you would rather see the city from above than a museum, skip it and go to Montjuïc.

Evening: Montjuïc, or a sunset sail

Funicular from Paral·lel on a metro ticket · cable car €19.00 return, €17.10 online · sailings from £12.00

Montjuïc: the funicular leaves from Paral·lel metro and takes any metro ticket; the cable car covers 750 m up to the castle, and the return stops at the Alcalde viewpoint (Montjuïc cable car guide has the hours by month; in October it closes at 19:00, in June to September at 21:00). The sea: from Barceloneta, a sunset catamaranad (from £24.00, 4.7 stars from 3,546 reviews, 1½ hours) sails from the Moll de Drassanes, and boat tours compared lists the others.

If you have half a day

  • With half a day: the Sagrada Família, one Gaudí house and lunch at the Boqueria.
  • For the old town only: the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and the Gothic Quarter’s lanes need no early start and no advance ticket except the museum’s.
  • For an evening show: a flamenco show is the alternative to Montjuïc; flamenco shows compared has the times.

Getting round

A T-casual gives one person 10 metro and bus journeys for €13, enough for the metro rides in this plan, and the funicular takes it too. Barcelona metro tickets says when the Hola Barcelona card is worth buying. From the airport, the Aerobús and the train both end in the centre.

For a second day, 3 days in Barcelona adds Park Güell, the Palau de la Música and the beach, and day trips from Barcelona adds Montserrat or Girona. For everything else to book, see what to book before you go.

Common questions

Is one day enough for Barcelona?

For a first look, yes: the Sagrada Família, one of Gaudí's houses on Passeig de Gràcia, La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter fit between 9:00 and early evening if the basilica is booked. Park Güell, Montjuïc's museums and the beach need a second day; the plan below puts Montjuïc in only as an evening choice.

What should I book for one day in Barcelona?

The Sagrada Família, which goes on sale roughly two months ahead for a fixed time, in your name, and turns late arrivals away. Casa Batlló's price rises closer to the date. The cathedral's tourist visit and the Picasso Museum can be booked once your day is fixed.

What is closed on a Sunday or a Monday in Barcelona?

On Sundays the Sagrada Família opens at 10:30 rather than 9:00, the cathedral's tourist visit runs only from 14:00 to 17:00, and the Boqueria market is closed. The Picasso Museum is closed on Mondays. Casa Batlló and the Montjuïc cable car are open every day, and La Pedrera is open every day except 25 December 2026 and 11 to 17 January 2027.

Can I see Barcelona in a day from a cruise ship?

Yes, with a booked Sagrada Família slot and a return to the port with time in hand. The Cruise Bus takes you from the Adossat terminals to La Rambla, and the plan below starts with the basilica, then works back down towards the sea.
