💡 The Short Version: Both are on the R11 from Sants: Girona 1 hour 19 (€12) and Figueres 1 hour 50 (€17.10) on the faster trains, with the last back from Figueres at 20:46. The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is closed on Mondays except in July and August, costs from €18.50 at its own site, takes 1½ to 2 hours, has no audio guide, and does not let in rucksacks or anything bigger than 35 × 35 × 25 cm. Or book a tour: the small-group Girona and Dalí Museum day tripad (from £55.93) includes the museum entry and a guided walk through Girona’s Jewish quarter, for about £11 more than the train and the ticket bought separately.

Getting there on your own

Both towns are on the R11 (Barcelona–Girona–Figueres–Portbou) from Barcelona-Sants, which also stops at Passeig de Gràcia, 5 minutes later. Times and fares for a weekday in October 2026 from the Rodalies de Catalunya timetable (rodalies.gencat.cat):

Figueres1 hour 50 to 1 hour 57, €17.10 single2 hours 10 to 2 hours 18, €12.802120:46
  • First trains: the first faster train leaves Sants at 5:56 for both towns.
  • Figueres: the R11 stops at Figueres station. High-speed trains stop at Figueres-Vilafant instead, which has a shuttle bus to the town centre.
  • Both in one day: a train to Figueres calls at Girona about half an hour earlier, so do Figueres first while you are fresh for the museum and stop in Girona on the way back.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum

Plaça Gala-Salvador Dalí 5, Figueres · from €18.50 · 1½ to 2 hours · closed Mondays except July and August

Dalí built the museum himself on the ruins of Figueres’s old theatre, which had burnt down, and it opened in 1974. The foundation says it holds the most extensive collection of his work anywhere: paintings, sculpture, installations and, in rooms 23 and 24, the jewellery he designed. The foundation recommends no route through it and offers no audio guide: Dalí meant it as one work of art, not to be explained in detail (salvador-dali.org, 29 September 2026).

The other Dalí museums

Each of the three Dalí museums needs its own ticket, and the foundation says you cannot see all three in one day:

  • Salvador Dalí House-Museum, Portlligat (Cadaqués): his only fixed home. Visits are in small groups every 10 minutes at a booked time; collect your ticket half an hour before, or it is cancelled without a refund. By public transport it is a coach from Figueres or Girona, and the foundation warns the trip may take the whole day.
  • Gala Dalí Castle, Púbol: a self-guided, one-way visit of about 75 minutes. No public transport reaches Púbol; the nearest station is Flaçà, 5 km away, then a taxi.

Girona

Girona’s old town holds the cathedral and the medieval Jewish quarter, the Call. Its streets were a filming location for the sixth season of Game of Thrones. Two walking tours start in Girona itself, for anyone arriving by train:

Medieval villages instead

The same corner of Catalonia has stone villages that trains don’t reach. The medieval villages day tourad (from £84.85, 4.8 stars from 554 reviews, 10 hours) visits Besalú, Rupit and the cliff-top village of Tavertet.

Girona and Figueres are one of several day trips from Barcelona; Montserrat is the other big one and suits a Monday, when the Dalí museum is shut. For the sights in the city that sell out, see what to book before you go in Barcelona.

Common questions

How do I get from Barcelona to Girona and Figueres by train?

Take the R11 from Barcelona-Sants or Passeig de Gràcia. On a weekday in October 2026 the faster Media Distància trains take 1 hour 19 to 1 hour 25 to Girona (€12 single) and 1 hour 50 to 1 hour 57 to Figueres (€17.10 single); the slower Regional trains are cheaper, €8.95 and €12.80. The last faster train back leaves Figueres at 20:46 and Girona at 21:19.

Is the Dalí Museum in Figueres open on Mondays?

Only in July and August, and on a few listed Mondays: in the rest of 2026, 12 October, 9 November and 7 December. Otherwise it is closed on Mondays, and on 1 January and 25 December. From 1 October to 31 December 2026 it opens 10:30 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday, with last entry 45 minutes before closing.

How much is the Dalí Theatre-Museum?

General admission is from €18.50 and reduced from €15, at the museum's own site; children up to 8 go free, and visitors from outside the EU pay the same. A guided visit is €26.50. Entry is free for everyone on 6 January, at Dalí's own request.

Can you do Girona and Figueres in one day?

Yes. Both are on the R11, about half an hour apart, and a train to Figueres calls at Girona on the way. Allow 1½ to 2 hours for the Dalí Theatre-Museum. A tour does both, and some add Cadaqués, which has no railway.
