💡 The Short Version: Barcelona’s Christmas market is the Fira de Santa Llúcia, on Avinguda de la Catedral in front of the cathedral. In 2025 it ran from 28 November to 23 December, 10:00 to 21:00 every day; the city publishes its 2026 Christmas programme in November. Most of its 215 stalls sell nativity-scene figures, moss, cork and Christmas trees rather than gifts. The Christmas lights were on from 17:30 to 1:00 last season. New Year’s Eve is a free fireworks and drone show at Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, below Montjuïc. The Three Kings parade on 5 January from 18:00 is the big night for children: the Kings bring the presents. On 25 December the Picasso Museum and the Dalí Theatre-Museum are closed; the Sagrada Família opens 9:00 to 14:00 on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January, and Park Güell every day of the year.

Dates for the 2026–27 season are published by the city in November 2026; the dates below are last season’s unless marked, from barcelona.cat and each operator’s own site, read on 30 September 2026.

The Christmas market: Fira de Santa Llúcia

Avinguda de la Catedral · 2025: 28 November to 23 December, 10:00–21:00 every day · free to walk round · Metro L4 Jaume I

The fair has been held in front of Barcelona cathedral since at least 1786, and its organisers call it the oldest fair devoted to the nativity scene (firadesantallucia.cat, in translation). In 2025 it had 215 stalls: 180 selling Christmas goods only, meaning nativity scenes and their figures, moss, cork and Christmas trees, and 35 selling crafts and gifts such as ceramics, jewellery, leather and textiles. The same hours applied on weekdays, weekends and holidays.

  • Getting there: Metro L4 to Jaume I, or Catalunya, Urquinaona or Liceu, then a few minutes’ walk into the Gothic Quarter. Buses 17, 19, 40, 45 and 120 stop nearby.
  • Busiest: weekends and holidays; the fair itself recommends public transport on those days.
  • A day of traditions: in 2025 the fair held its day of Catalan Christmas customs on Saturday 13 December, with performances round the stalls.

Two figures to look for

  • The caganer: a small figure of a shepherd squatting behind a bush, found only in Catalan and Valencian nativity scenes and said to bring luck. The modern ones carry the faces of politicians, footballers and celebrities.
  • The tió: a log with a face and a blanket, “fed” by children from 8 December and beaten with a stick on Christmas Eve until it “poos” sweets and presents.

Both are described on Barcelona’s Christmas traditions page.

The lights

2025–26: 17:30 to 1:00, Sunday to Thursday; to 2:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before public holidays

The city’s Christmas lights include designer installations in the streets, lit fountains in every district, the façades of the municipal markets and landmarks such as the Obelisk on Passeig de Gràcia and the Torre de les Aigües. Shop windows in Sant Antoni and Poble-sec carried light installations by young designers (barcelona.cat).

Two tours on GetYourGuide are built round the lights. Both are small, and prices are the lowest “from” price on 30 September 2026:

New Year’s Eve

Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina · 23:50 to 0:10 · free, no tickets

Barcelona sees the year out with a show of fireworks, drones and music on the avenue that runs up from Plaça Espanya towards Montjuïc. On 31 December 2025 it ran from ten minutes before midnight to ten minutes after, produced by Groupe F (barcelona.cat). There is no capacity limit. A reserved area for people with reduced mobility is at the corner of Carrer de Rius i Taulet; bring ID.

The Three Kings: 5 January

In Catalonia the Three Kings, not Father Christmas, bring children’s presents, overnight on 5 January.

The Three Kings parade

5 January from 18:00 · streets of the city centre · free

The Kings arrive with floats and costumed helpers and parade through the centre on the evening of 5 January; in January 2026 it started at 18:00 (barcelona.cat). The route is published before the day and the parade can be followed live on the city’s site.

Where to stay for the market

The fair is in front of the cathedral, so a hotel in the Gothic Quarter is next to it. Hotel Neri, at Carrer de Sant Sever 5, is about 110 m from the cathedral (Hotels.comad); H10 Madison, at Carrer del Doctor Joaquim Pou 2–6, about 230 m (Hotels.comad). Where to stay in Barcelona compares the areas; every hotel adds the tourist tax, €7 to €12 per adult per night, for stays up to 31 March 2027.

For the other festivals, see La Mercè in September and best time to visit Barcelona for the year’s weather and holidays. For a day out of the city over the holidays, the day trips from Barcelona page has the train times; Monday closures still apply at the Dalí Theatre-Museum, and Montserrat’s choir does not sing over Christmas.
