Where to stay in Barcelona: the areas and hotels for a first visit

For a first visit, stay in the Gothic Quarter or the Eixample: both are on the Aerobús route and a walk from most of the sights. The areas compared on what you can walk to and how you get to the airport, hotels with addresses checked on their own sites, and the tourist tax of €7 to €12 per adult per night on top of the room.

💡 The Short Version: For a first visit, stay in the Gothic Quarter or the Eixample. The Gothic Quarter has the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and La Rambla within a few minutes’ walk; the Eixample has Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia, and the airport train stops at Passeig de Gràcia. Both are on the Aerobús route: its stops into town are Plaça Espanya, Gran Via–Comte Borrell, Plaça Universitat and Plaça Catalunya. Stay by the beach at the Vila Olímpica for a summer trip. Whatever you book, the hotel adds a tourist tax of €7 to €12 per adult per night. Hotels named after the Sagrada Família are not always next to it: check the address.

Near the Sagrada Família

Both hotels here carry the basilica’s name but stand in Camp de l’Arpa, east of it: about 1 and 1.4 km away in a straight line. That is still walkable for an early slot, but not next door. Hotels near the Sagrada Família lists the closer places, from apartments 200 m away to a hotel with a rooftop pool.

How much is the tourist tax in Barcelona hotels?
