The beach season
The council sets the lifeguard calendar each year. In 2026 it ran like this (barcelona.cat, 30 September 2026):

- High season, 30 May to 13 September: every lifeguard and rescue post is open every day, 10:30 to 19:30, with an information service on every beach.
- Mid season: 28 to 31 March; 1 to 6 April, weekends and 27 to 30 April; 1 to 29 May; 14 to 27 September; and 3 and 4 October. The lifeguards work 10:30 to 18:30.
- The rest of the year: no lifeguards, only the 112 emergency line.
The council also bans smoking on all the city’s beaches, except at the beach bars and on the promenades. It says jellyfish are swept towards the coast in spring and summer, and warns visitors not to swim among them or touch one, even a dead one. For hotels by the sand, see Barcelona hotels near the beach.
August
- Heat: highs of 28.5°C and lows of 20.2°C, the warmest nights of the year.
- Dalí Theatre-Museum: in Figueres it opens every day from 1 July to 31 August, 9:00 to 20:00; it is closed on most Mondays the rest of the year. See Girona and the Dalí Theatre-Museum.
- Montserrat: the Escolania boys’ choir does not sing from 24 June to the end of August (montserratvisita.com); see the Montserrat day trip.
- Restaurants and bakeries: some close for part of the summer. Forn Mistral’s site lists August as closed for holidays, and Can Culleretes listed a closure from 27 July to 24 August in 2026; see where to eat in Barcelona.
- Gràcia: the neighbourhood’s own festival, the Festa Major de Gràcia, runs for about a week from 15 August, the feast of the Assumption. Residents decorate their streets and squares; in 2026 the sardana gathering was on 17 August and the street-decoration prizes were awarded on 19 August (festamajordegracia.cat, 30 September 2026). The 2027 dates have not been announced.
The night of Sant Joan
Barcelona has no single Sant Joan festival: every neighbourhood holds its own on the night of 23 June. On the afternoon of the 23rd the Flama del Canigó, carried down from the Canigó mountain in the Pyrenees, is received in Plaça Sant Jaume, and representatives of each district take it to light their bonfires. Dinners, fireworks displays and dances in the squares and streets last until dawn; the traditional food is the coca de Sant Joan, a flat sweet cake, with cava. Midnight swims are a custom on the coast (barcelona.cat, in Catalan, 30 September 2026).
