What to see

The Maestranza is a historic monument, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and has been part of the city since the 18th century. It stands in the Arenal district by the river, close to the Torre del Oro. The visit is a route through four parts:

  1. The arena and its stands. The Puerta del Príncipe is the ring’s best-known gate.
  2. The exhibition hall. The Painting Room has oil paintings from the 18th to 20th centuries, mainly Romantic, by artists including Eugenio Lucas, Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer and Horace Vernet. The Print Room holds almost all the historical bullfighting series of the 18th and 19th centuries, including one of the earliest known images of a bullfight, by J. Stradan, from 1578. The collection runs from Goya to Jean Cocteau.
  3. The costumes and memorabilia. Bullfighters’ costumes, capes, posters, bulls’ heads and contemporary paintings make up the last rooms of the hall.
  4. The Patio de Caballos and the chapel. The Bullfighters’ Chapel has an altarpiece of the Virgin of the Rosary, with offerings left by bullfighters.
