What to see
Go in this order:
- The funicular. The line is 509 m long, with three stops (Újezd at the bottom, Nebozízek in the middle and Petřín at the top), climbs 126 m and takes 3.2 minutes. The new cars, designed by Anna Marešová’s studio, have glazed sides and a glass roof, and the line has no driver, so passengers in the front can see the track. From the Nebozízek stop there is a view of Prague Castle.
- The tower. Built for the Jubilee Exhibition of 1891 as a loose copy of the Eiffel Tower at a ratio of 1:5, 58.70 m high, with 299 steps. Its summit is at the same altitude as the real tower’s, and the view reaches nearly all of Bohemia on a clear day.
- The Mirror Maze. In a building like a small castle near the tower. You find your way to a diorama of the Praguers’ battle against the Swedes on Charles Bridge in 1648, then through a hall of distorting mirrors.
- The gardens. Walk down through Petřín Gardens. The Hunger Wall, which Charles IV had built in 1360 to 1362, is crossed by the funicular line, and the Church of St Lawrence is recorded from 1135. The Rose Garden, laid out in 1932, is the youngest of the gardens.

What to skip: the lift, unless the steps are a problem. It is a separate 150 CZK, and it goes to the 51 m platform.

| November and December | 10:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 18:00 |
- Every day, the tower and the maze both.
- The funicular runs daily from 7:00 to 22:15, every 10 minutes. The Prague transport company describes this as trial operation.
- Access: the tower is partly accessible. A wheelchair can use the lift only up to the 20 m platform, and a fully accessible public toilet is near the tower.
- Getting there: the funicular’s bottom stop is Újezd, in Malá Strana. Walking up Petřín is a climb, and the funicular saves it.
- Seen from the river: the hour-long Prague Steamboats cruise in the Vltava river cruises guide points out the Petřín lookout tower above Lesser Town.
The tower is free on the Prague Visitor Pass, like the Old Town Hall and the Charles Bridge towers. Prague Castle is on the same side of the river, and Vyšehrad is the other hill with a view. Across the river, the Jewish Quarter tickets guide covers the museum’s sites. For the rest of the city’s bookings, see what to book before you go in Prague. 3 days in Prague and Prague in one day build the plan round the bookings. To stay on this side of the river, where to stay in Prague compares Malá Strana with the other areas, and where to eat in Prague lists Café Savoy and other Malá Strana restaurants.
