The tickets, compared

Prices are from the Vyšehrad monument’s tour page and the basilica’s own ticket page, converted at about CZK 28.8 to the pound. The basilica belongs to the Royal Collegiate Chapter of St Peter and Paul, not to the city, so it sets its own prices. GetYourGuide prices are its lowest “from” prices.

What to see

Allow 2.5 hours for the basilica, the cemetery and the underground, which is the length of the guided tour that covers all three. Go in this order:

  1. The ramparts and the park. Free, with views over the city: the fortress stands on a rock above the Vltava. The monument’s free audio route, “Walk along the Ramparts”, follows them.
  2. The Basilica of St Peter and St Paul. Founded by the first Czech king, Vratislav, who set up a church chapter here. The present building, with its two neo-Gothic towers, is by Josef Mocker, and the towers are 58 m high. Inside are Art Nouveau paintings, the Gothic Vyšehrad Madonna, the reliquary of St Valentine and a Romanesque sarcophagus. The carillon plays daily from 11:00 to 21:00.
  3. Vyšehrad Cemetery and the Slavín tomb. Beside the basilica, inside Neo-Renaissance arcades. The Slavín, topped by a winged Genius of the Nation, has a crypt holding forty prominent Czechs.
  4. The Gorlice underground. The casemates run for more than a kilometre in four sections. Gorlice is the largest underground hall in historic Prague, built by a mistake of the fortress’s builder, and it now holds six original Baroque statues from Charles Bridge. The oldest casemates hold a “foundation brick” from 1654.

What to skip: the underground tour if you have only an hour. The ramparts, the park and the basilica are the visit, and the tour is another 45 to 60 minutes and 330 CZK.
