Which month for what

  • Walking the hills: May and late September, when the highs are 23 to 27°C and the rain is light. The Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars and the Santa Justa Lift are shut, so the climbs are on foot; see Tram 28 and the funiculars.
  • The beach and a rooftop pool: June to September, when the highs are 26 to 29°C. Lisbon hotels with a rooftop pool gives each pool’s months, and Cascais is 38 to 40 minutes by train.
  • The June festival: the Marchas Populares parade, the street parties and the grilled sardines, with 13 June a closed day for Belém. The Santos Populares guide has the dates.
  • Fewer queues: the wet months, November to January, apart from Web Summit week and the Christmas weeks. Bring a coat and plan indoor stops: the Oceanário is open every day.
  • A day out: Sintra and the other day trips from Lisbon are best on a dry day; Pena Palace is a timed slot whatever the weather.

August

The main sights stay open, and so does the Oceanário. Some small local businesses, tascas and pastry shops close for days or weeks, often with a paper sign on the door, so confirm a table before you cross the city for it, according to the food-tour operator Taste of Lisboa (2 August 2026). The Lisbon food tours run through August, and each entry in where to eat in Lisbon gives its closed days.
