In this guide
💡 The Short Version: Cascais is a CP train from Cais do Sodré, 38 to 40 minutes, €5.10 return, and on weekdays CP’s timetable has a train every 20 minutes through the day. You need no tour. The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, the Museu do Mar and the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães close on Mondays. CP’s €9 Museum Quarter ticket covers the return train and four sites, against €10.10 for the train and the Paula Rego museum alone. Leave Cascais before the evening engineering works: a replacement bus runs between Cascais and Caxias during full closures, from 21:50 on weekdays and 20:50 on Saturdays. Or book a tour: the Sintra to Cascais e-bike dayad (from £68.33) ends in Cascais, and the big Sintra coach tours stop here.
Getting there on your own
CP’s Cascais timetable (valid from 12 May 2025), its fare sheet (in force from 1 January 2026) and its notice of 21 September 2026.
- Train: CP’s Cascais line from Cais do Sodré, 38 to 40 minutes. Weekday trains leave every 20 minutes from late morning (10:42, 11:02, 11:22 and so on), with extra trains at the peaks. The first leaves at 5:32, and after 23:00 they run half-hourly to 1:32.
- Fare: a return costs €5.10, loaded on a Navegante occasional card (€0.50, bought once and valid for a year). The Lisboa Card and the 24-hour Carris/Metro/CP ticket (€11.40) also cover the line; the 24-hour ticket pays only if you also ride the metro or trams, and Lisbon public transport compares the tickets.
- Belém is on the way. Belém station is on the Cascais line. A single ticket for four zones is valid for 2 hours after you validate it, so a morning at Belém needs a day ticket: CP’s own 24-hour tourist ticket is €6.70 on its Lisbon urban trains, and the 24-hour Carris/Metro/CP ticket is €11.40. The Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are closed on Mondays.
- Evening works. Since 6 April 2026, CP has been modernising the track between Caxias and Cascais. During full closures a replacement bus runs between Cascais and Caxias, on weekdays from 21:50, on Saturdays from 20:50 and on Sundays from 05:30 to 08:50 and from 19:50. It does not connect with the timetable trains at Oeiras, except for the last train of the night. Buses carry no bicycles (CP notice). Check the CP app on the day.

A day, hour by hour
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Morning | Train from Cais do Sodré, 38 to 40 minutes (with a day ticket you can stop at Belém first, unless it is a Monday) |
| Late morning | Casa das Histórias Paula Rego or the Castro Guimarães museum; both are shut on Mondays |
| Lunch | In the town |
| Afternoon | The Boca do Inferno along the coastal walkway, then a beach |
| Early evening | Train back to Cais do Sodré, before the replacement bus can start: 21:50 on weekdays, 20:50 on Saturdays, 19:50 on Sundays |
If the weather is rough, the museums are the day; on a Monday, the walkway and the beach are.
Combining it with somewhere else
On your own, Parques de Sintra lists bus 1624 from Cascais bus terminal to Portela de Sintra via Azóia and Almoçageme as the way from Cascais to Cabo da Roca, where the lighthouse is €5 (parquesdesintra.pt). The Sintra day trip guide has the palaces, and Pena Palace tickets has the time slot. Cascais is one of the day trips from Lisbon; 3 days in Lisbon covers the days in the city around it. For the rest of the city’s bookings, see what to book before you go to Lisbon.
