💡 The Short Version: A ticket is €15 (the online ticket office shows €15.92), for a half-hour slot: the Tower reopened on 27 May 2026 with entry for 60 visitors at a time and 960 a day at most. Buy online for a day and time, or at the kiosk opposite the Jerónimos Monastery; the operator warns that tickets often sell out and cannot be bought on the day. It is closed on Mondays. There is no combined ticket with the monastery. Or book a tour: the Belém Tower guided tour with entryad (from £41.85, GetYourGuide, 1 October 2026) is an hour with a guide, and the Tower is a small place to be shown round.

- Whatever you buy, the Tower admits by slot. Check that the ticket carries a time.
- The slots. There are 15, each half an hour: the first runs from 9:30 to 9:59, and the last from 16:30 to 17:00.
- No combined ticket. The operator’s combined tickets pair the Jerónimos Monastery with the Coaches Museum (€30) and the Ajuda Palace (€40), and none includes the Tower. The monastery has its own ticket and slots.
- The online price. The ticket office shows €15.92 for the full-price ticket, so budget about €1 more than the list price.
- Free days. The operator’s rules list free entry on 18 April, 18 May and the European Heritage Days in September, on the instructions of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal.
How to buy
- Online: on the ticket office of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, reached from the operator’s site. You choose the day and a half-hour slot. Entry is checked by QR code or barcode.
- At the kiosk: a kiosk in the square opposite the Jerónimos Monastery issues physical tickets for both the Tower and the monastery, and the ticket offices close at 16:30.
- Only two official sellers. The operator names the kiosk and its online ticket office. A ticket from any other site is a resale.
- Lisboa Card holders book on the same ticket office, on the separate Lisboa Card ticket: choose the payment option “Lisboa Card 100%” and enter the card number. The ticket works only after the card is validated at the device at the Tower. See is the Lisboa Card worth it? for the catch.
- The wait. At the reopening the monument’s director estimated a wait of about 20 minutes at most with the slots (Observador, 26 May 2026, in Portuguese).

What to see
The Tower was built between 1514 and 1519 for King Manuel I, on a basalt outcrop in the river 250 metres from the bank, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 with the Jerónimos Monastery. It is made of lioz, the pale local limestone, which the works cleaned.

- From outside. The carved decoration is Manuel I’s: the royal coat of arms, armillary spheres and the cross of the Order of Christ.
- The bastion. The six-sided battery that projects into the river, with openings for cannon facing the water. The terrace on top is closed to strollers and wheelchairs.
- The tower. The staircase is a narrow spiral that holds few people at once.
A guided tour takes an hour. What to skip: the inside, if all you want is a photograph of the Tower: the outside can be seen without a ticket. In Belém the Tower and the monastery together take a morning: book the Tower for the first slots and the monastery for 1½ hours later, which leaves time for the walk between them.

Hours, rules and getting there
- Open: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00.
- Closed: Mondays, and on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June (Lisbon’s city holiday; see Santos Populares) and 25 December. Because of its exposure to the weather, the monument can close when visitors’ safety is at risk.
- Accessibility: wheelchair access stops at the ground floor, the nave of the bastion.
- Bags: large suitcases, trolleys and backpacks are not allowed in. No food or drink, no flash, and no tripods or selfie sticks.
- Getting there: the Tower is about a 15-minute walk along the river from the monastery. Tram 15E from Praça da Figueira and Cais do Sodré stops at Belém and Mosteiro Jerónimos; the Cascais-line train, which runs on to Cascais, stops at Belém station. Lisbon public transport has the fares for both. An Ask Me Lisboa tourist desk in the Tower’s gardens is open 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays.
For the monastery next door, see the Jerónimos Monastery tickets guide; for the tram out, the tram and funicular guide; for where to eat in Belém, where to eat in Lisbon; and for every closing day, what to book before you go in Lisbon.
To sleep a walk from both monuments, see hotels near Belém. The Tower sits on Day 2 of 3 days in Lisbon and in the Belém morning of Lisbon in one day, and a ship passenger can reach it from either terminal with the cruise port to city guide.
Common questions
How much is a ticket to Belém Tower?
€15 for an adult, from the operator's visiting page on 1 October 2026. Visitors aged 65 and over and aged 13 to 24 pay half, and children up to 12 go free. The online ticket office shows the full-price ticket at €15.92.
Do you need to book Belém Tower in advance?
Entry is by half-hour slot, and the Tower admits 60 visitors at a time and 960 a day at most. The operator advises buying online, because tickets often sell out and cannot be bought on the day. A kiosk opposite the Jerónimos Monastery also sells them.
Is Belém Tower open?
Yes. It reopened to visitors on 27 May 2026 after conservation works, the first major works since 1998. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00, and closed on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December.
Is it worth going inside Belém Tower?
The inside is small: a narrow spiral staircase limits how many people can be in the tower at once, and a visit is short. If you only want to see it, the outside can be seen from the gardens around it without a ticket. Go inside for the bastion and the stairs.
Does the Lisboa Card include Belém Tower?
Yes, free, but you must book a date and time with the card number, and only after you have collected the card in Lisbon. Lisboa Card holders have a limited daily allocation of slots.
