💡 The Short Version: Stay in Belém to walk to the Jerónimos Monastery (€18) and Belém Tower (€15) before the day’s tour groups arrive. Both are closed on Mondays, the Tower sells timed slots, and the operator warns that tickets to both often sell out and cannot be bought on the day. Three hotels below are 140 to 515 m from the nearer monument. The trade-off: Belém is about 6 km west of the centre and has no Metro, so Baixa is a ride on tram 15E or a train from Cais do Sodré. Or book a tour: the Belém and Jerónimos Monastery tourad, 3 hours with an optional Tower or boat ride, is from £58.94 (4.9 stars from 1,276 reviews, GetYourGuide, 1 October 2026).

Why stay here

  • The Jerónimos Monastery is €18, with the cloister open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. The church opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 17:00, and on Sundays and religious holidays from 14:00. It provides no audio guides (mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt, 1 October 2026).
  • Belém Tower is €15, open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. It reopened on 27 May 2026 after conservation works, the first major works since 1998, and now admits visitors in timed slots. The operator can close it when the weather makes it unsafe.
  • Closed: both monuments shut on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December, and the Monastery can close for state events. Plan Belém for a Tuesday to Sunday.
  • The Lisboa Card makes both free, but you can reserve their time slots only after you have collected the physical card in Lisbon, from a limited daily allocation (Visit Lisboa shop, 1 October 2026).
  • Getting in from the centre: tram 15E from Praça da Figueira and Praça do Comércio stops at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos; it is an articulated tram, which takes cards and phones but no cash. CP trains run from Cais do Sodré to Belém, on the Cascais Line that continues to Cascais. Night bus 201 runs from Cais do Sodré to Belém, and bus 728 runs through Belém to Cais do Sodré, Santa Apolónia and Oriente. Lisbon public transport has the fares.

Before you book

  • The tourist tax is extra: Lisbon charges each guest €4 a night for up to 7 nights, from the age of 13, paid at the hotel (Deco Proteste, 1 October 2026).
  • Check the address, not the name. The distances above are from each hotel’s own address.
  • Book the tickets with the room. Buy the Monastery and the Tower from the operator’s ticket office as soon as your dates are fixed, and choose a day that is not a Monday.
  • Elsewhere in Lisbon: where to stay in Lisbon compares the areas, and hotels with a rooftop pool gives the Altis Belém pool beside the other summer pools. From the airport, see Lisbon airport to the city centre, and from the cruise terminal, cruise port to the city.
