What to see
The palace was bought in 1550 by Cosimo I de’ Medici and his wife Eleanor of Toledo as the grand-ducal residence, and later housed the Habsburg-Lorraine and Savoy courts. A Pitti ticket admits you to each museum once: when you leave one, you cannot go back in.

- The Royal Apartments, by tour. Three centuries of court rooms of the King and Queen, on the first floor. The tour is 30 minutes, free with the ticket, in groups of up to 20, on slots every half hour from 10:00 to 17:00. It must be booked online with the ticket, or at the ticket office on the day, and it must fall on the same day as your Palatine Gallery visit. Be at the meeting point (the entrance hall of the Palatine Gallery) five minutes early, or you lose the slot. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there from the main door.
- The Palatine Gallery, the Medici’s paintings hung in their sumptuous frames among furnishings, stuccoes, silks and Baroque frescoes.
- The second floor. The Gallery of Modern Art (Neoclassicism to the 1930s) and the Museum of Costume and Fashion.
- The Museum of Russian Icons and the Palatine Chapel, on the ground floor.
- The Boboli Gardens, behind the palace: the Buontalenti grotto, the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Ocean, among ancient and Renaissance statues. You can enter by the palace courtyard or by Annalena, Porta Romana or Forte di Belvedere, and leave by any of them.
