What to see

The chapels are the burial place of the Medici, made a state museum in 1869. The visit runs from the crypt up to the sacristy:

  1. The Medici Crypt. The visit starts here, where the Grand Dukes and their families are buried, from Cosimo I to Gian Gastone, who died in 1737 and ended the dynasty. The Lorraine Crypt holds the Habsburg-Lorraine tombs.
  2. The Chapel of the Princes. On the upper floor, the grand-ducal mausoleum, in multicoloured marbles and hardstones, under a dome frescoed by Pietro Benvenuti (1828 to 1837).
  3. The New Sacristy. Michelangelo designed the architecture and carved the sculpture between 1519 and 1534 for the tombs of Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, and Giuliano, Duke of Nemours. The allegories of Night, Day, Twilight and Dawn are on the dukes’ monuments, and a Madonna and Child between Saints Cosmas and Damian is on the tomb of Lorenzo the Magnificent and Giuliano.
  4. Michelangelo’s hidden room, if you reserve it: a small room with mural drawings attributed to Michelangelo.
  5. San Lorenzo basilica, on its own ticket: Brunelleschi’s Old Sacristy, the cloisters, the treasury and the crypt. It was the Medici family’s official church, and they buried their dead in it up to the last descendant, Anna Maria Luisa.

What to skip: the hidden room, if you have little time or dislike narrow stairs. The museum calls the New Sacristy an absolute masterpiece of architecture and sculpture.
