What the square is like
The cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore stands in Piazza del Duomo with the Baptistery in front of it and Giotto’s Bell Tower beside it. Santa Maria Novella station is 0.4 to 1 km from the hotels below on a straight line. The square holds the Christmas tree and, on Easter morning, the cart of fire: see Christmas in Florence and Easter in Florence. The monuments have their own guide: Duomo tickets and the dome climb. Distances are straight lines from the cathedral, so a walk is a little longer.

Before you book
- The tax. The city council, the Comune di Firenze, charges the imposta di soggiorno, a tourist tax, to people who are not residents of Florence, for at most seven consecutive nights, at a rate set by the hotel’s category (Comune di Firenze).
- Dates that fill the centre. The Firenze Marathon is on Sunday 29 November 2026, and Pitti Immagine Uomo runs 12 to 15 January and 15 to 18 June 2027. The Calcio Storico final on 24 June is in Piazza Santa Croce, 0.5 to 1.1 km from these hotels.
- The square in winter. The tree goes up in Piazza del Duomo, and on Easter morning the area inside Via Cerretani, Borgo San Lorenzo, Via dei Servi, Via dei Calzaiuoli and Piazza della Repubblica was closed to traffic from 06:00 in 2026.
- Elsewhere. Where to stay in Florence compares Santa Croce, the Oltrarno, Santo Spirito, San Lorenzo and the station side.
