A Danube cruise
Legenda 25 euros · GetYourGuide from £9.31 · runs when water levels allow
Legenda’s evening Danube Legend leaves every 20 minutes from 17:40 to 22:00 until 24 October, and every 20 minutes from 16:20 to 21:00 from 25 October. The unlimited drinks cruisead is from £21.08 (4.8 stars from 49,699 reviews, 75 minutes). The Danube is low, so Danube river cruises says which boats are running.
Getting about
Most of the day is on foot, with the funicular or bus 16 for the hill. A single ticket is HUF 500 and covers one vehicle, and a 24-hour travelcard is HUF 2,750. Contactless works on the metro and the 100E only, so buy a ticket in the BudapestGO app for trams and other buses (Budapest public transport).
From a layover
- From the airport, the 100E bus takes 40 minutes to Deák Ferenc tér on its own HUF 2,500 ticket, which no other ticket replaces: Budapest Airport to the city centre compares it with the 200E and the taxi.
- Passport control: the EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so allow time on arrival and again before the flight home (EU Entry/Exit System).
- Where it starts: Deák Ferenc tér, where the 100E stops, is a short walk from the Basilica, and the Parliament is on tram 2.
If you have more time

For the evening, ruin bars covers District VII, and the Széchenyi Baths are open to 22:00 on Fridays; Budapest thermal baths compares the others.
Common questions
Can you see Budapest in one day?
You can see the core: the Hungarian Parliament in the morning, St Stephen's Basilica, the Chain Bridge on foot, Castle Hill in the afternoon and a Danube cruise in the evening. Book the Parliament tour in advance, because advance tickets are sold online only.
What should I book for one day in Budapest?
The Parliament tour: UK visitors pay 14,000 HUF, and advance tickets are online only, at jegymester.hu. A Danube cruise can be booked on the day or ahead, and runs when water levels allow. The Basilica, Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion terrace sell tickets at the door.
Is the Budapest Card worth it for one day?
No. The 24-hour card is HUF 17,990, and a 24-hour travelcard is HUF 2,750. The card does not cover the Parliament, Fisherman's Bastion or Matthias Church, and it pays back only for a plan that adds a bath, a museum and a cruise.
How do I see Budapest on a layover from the airport?
Take the 100E bus to Deák Ferenc tér, 40 minutes on a HUF 2,500 airport ticket, which is valid only on that bus. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so allow time at passport control. Tram 2 along the Pest bank passes the Parliament and the Chain Bridge.
