💡 The Short Version: Start at Clark Ádám tér, at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge, and finish at the Vienna Gate: 2.8 km, about 40 minutes of walking, and a full day with the museums. The funicular is closed from 5 to 16 October 2026; the steps beside it reach the palace terrace in about 330 m. Walk it Tuesday to Friday: the National Gallery is shut on Mondays, and Matthias Church is open only from 9:00 to 12:15 on Saturdays and from 13:15 on Sundays. Book the Hospital in the Rock, which can be visited only on a guided tour, and a time slot if you want the church tower. On 23 October the Gallery and the Bastion terrace are free, and the Gallery warns of queues of up to two hours. Or book a tour: a Castle Hill tour from the Zero Kilometre Stonead (from £33, 2.5 to 3.5 hours) starts at stop 1 and passes Matthias Church and the Bastion, and a 2-hour district walkad is from £10.

The Buda Castle Funicular has linked the Danube bank with the Castle since 1870. Its 95-metre track climbs 50 metres in 95 seconds, in two cars named Gellért and Margit. The lower station is on Clark Ádám tér beside the Tunnel, and the upper one is at Szent György tér, between the palace and the Sándor Palace, the presidential residence. It leaves every 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Tickets are sold at the funicular’s ticket offices, which close at 21:50, and online at siklojegy.hu. It takes no BKK ticket, and the Budapest Card Plus gives free travel both ways.
  • Out of service on Mondays of odd-numbered weeks for maintenance: 19 October, 2, 16 and 30 November and 14 December 2026, by ISO week number. When the Monday is a holiday, the work moves to the next working day.
  • Without the funicular: from 5 to 16 October, take the steps from the Zero Kilometre Stone up to the palace terrace, about 330 m, or buses 16, 16A and 116, which stop at the upper station. Trams 19 and 41 and buses 16 and 105 reach Clark Ádám tér.

The Gallery fills the Royal Palace, the long building with the dome above the funicular. Its permanent exhibitions run from Gothic art and late Gothic winged altarpieces to Hungarian painting of the 19th century, with a display called Variations on Realism, from Munkácsy to Mednyánszky, and the art of the 20th century. A new exhibition, Dedicated Ones, on Hungarian women artists in the first half of the 20th century, opens on 21 October.

  • The ticket is for a single entry on the day, and a ticket for a temporary exhibition also admits you to the permanent one. Half-price tickets are 2,900 HUF. The exhibitions start closing at 17:30 on the top floor.
  • The dome can be visited with the admission ticket, depending on the weather, until 17:00.
  • 23 October 2026 is free, with every exhibition open from 10:00 to 18:00, no guided tours or audio guides and, the Gallery warns, queues of up to one or two hours at the door.
  • Closed on 24 and 25 December, and open on 1 November.
  • The Museum Café is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:45: see where to eat.

The Budapest History Museum’s Castle Museum is in the south wing of the palace. Its permanent exhibition, Buda, the Seat and Throne of Royalty, fills the lower level with the restored rooms of the medieval royal palace uncovered by excavations from the 1950s: the Gothic Hall, the Chapel and the Treasurer’s House, with an exhibition on the Corvina Library and a gallery of the Gothic sculptures found in the palace.

  • Tickets are sold at the main entrance in the Lion Courtyard, at the King’s Cellar entrance on the eastern castle wall and at the Castle Garden Bazaar. The exhibitions close from the second floor at 17:45.
  • Closed on 1 November and from 24 to 26 December 2026, and open on 23 October.
  • The price is in Buda Castle tickets, which also compares the Budapest Card.

4. Matthias Church

Church 3,400 HUF (about £7.85), tower 4,000 HUF (about £9.20) · Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00, Saturday 9:00 to 12:15, Sunday 13:15 to 17:00

From the palace the route climbs to Szentháromság tér, the square in front of the church. The church was founded in 1246 or 1247, and Charles Robert was crowned in it in 1309. Matthias Corvinus married Catherine of Podebrady in it in 1463 and Beatrice of Aragon in 1476. It was a mosque under the Ottomans until Buda was retaken on 2 September 1686. Franz Joseph and Elisabeth were crowned Hungarian king and queen in it on 8 June 1867, and Charles IV, the last king, on 30 December 1916. Frigyes Schulek’s restoration was consecrated on 15 August 1896.

  • Opening hours change. Liturgical events and state delegations take priority, so check the church’s calendar before you go.
  • The tower is entered by timed slot, 30 minutes each, from 9:30 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 16:30, valid only for the date and time bought. The ticket includes a 10-minute guided tour, and the climb is 197 steps with no lift or toilet.
  • The church ticket is valid for any day of the calendar year, and an audio guide for your own phone is 1,600 HUF, or 5,000 HUF as a bundle with the church ticket. Students and over-65s pay 2,700 HUF. Tickets are non-refundable.
  • Not on the Budapest Card. Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church has the rest.

5. Fisherman’s Bastion

Upper terrace 1,700 HUF (about £3.90), half price for under-14s, students and over-65s at the desk · 9:00 to 19:00 from 1 October to 23 December · free on 23 October

Frigyes Schulek designed the Bastion as part of Hungary’s millennium celebrations, and it was built from 1895 to 1902 beside the church. Its seven towers stand for the seven Magyar tribes, and it takes its name from the fishermen’s guild that defended this stretch of the medieval walls. Only the upper lookout level is ticketed; the lower terraces and arcades are free.

  • Tickets: full-price tickets can be bought online at ticket.budavar.hu, and the reduced tickets are sold only at the desk, with proof.
  • Free days: 1 January, 15 March, 20 August, 23 October and 24 to 31 December.
  • The Panorama ticket, 2,700 HUF, covers this terrace and the Mary Magdalene Tower at stop 7.

6. Hospital in the Rock

30 EUR (about 11,000 HUF) for the English tour, 22 EUR for over-65s and students with an ISIC card, 15 EUR for ages 6 to 18 · ticket office 10:00 to 18:00, last tour 18:00 · closed 1 November

The museum is under the castle, at Lovas út 4/c. From Matthias Church, walk along Szentháromság utca to Tóth Árpád sétány, take the stairs or the lift down to Lovas út, turn right and the entrance is 3 m along. It can be visited only as a guided tour of about 60 minutes, which is included in the price, and the tour times are in the online ticket menu. The museum has limited capacity, so buy online in advance.

  • The rules: no photographs, video or audio recordings. Children under 6 are not admitted, and under 12 is not recommended.
  • Payment: the vending machines take credit cards, and the ticket counter takes only SZÉP cards.
  • Closed on 1 January, 1 November, 24 and 25 December and 31 December.
  • More: the Hospital in the Rock covers the tour and the prices.

Getting there and back

  • To the start: Clark Ádám tér is at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge. Trams 19 and 41 and buses 16 and 105 stop there. See Budapest airport to the city centre.
  • From the end: the Vienna Gate is at the north end of the hill, and buses 16, 16A and 116 serve Castle Hill. The steps you came up lead back down to the Danube. Budapest public transport has the tickets.
  • In reverse: the route also works from the Vienna Gate downhill, but the funicular then comes last, and the Hospital in the Rock’s last tour at 18:00 and the church’s weekend hours set the order.
