💡 The Short Version: Szentendre and Gödöllő are the easy trips: a suburban train of 39 minutes or less, about £2 to £3 each way to Szentendre and 1,490 HUF (£3.50) return to Gödöllő, and each fits in half a day. Eger is a direct 1 hour 52 minute train (5,660 HUF, £13, return) with no group tour on GetYourGuide, so go on your own. The Danube Bend is the trip a tour improves: three towns on three timetables, and the Danube boats are suspended for low water. Vienna and Bratislava in one day is a tour. Or book a tour: the Danube Bend day tripad (£72.24, 4.3 stars from 652 reviews, 9 hours, lunch included) replaces three bus timetables with one booking and costs about £45 more than doing the loop yourself, and the small-group Vienna and Bratislava tourad (£150.43, 4.7 stars from 289 reviews, 12 hours) is the only practical way to see both in a day (GetYourGuide).

The day trips compared

Train and bus fares are full adult second-class fares from menetrendek.hu, Hungary’s national timetable, and RegioJet’s own search for Vienna and Bratislava. Tour prices are GetYourGuide’s lowest “from” price for one adult.

When a tour is worth it

A tour earns its price where the connections are poor or the day is long:

Not worth a tour: Eger (GetYourGuide has no group tour), Szentendre (the HÉV costs about £5 return against £59.49 for the half-day tour, which adds only a guide) and Lake Balaton and Hévíz (the trains are a third of the price; the small-group tours are capped at 8 and 4 guests).

Common questions

What is the easiest day trip from Budapest?

Szentendre and Gödöllő. Szentendre is the H5 HÉV from Batthyány tér, 39 minutes, every 20 minutes. Gödöllő is a MÁV train from Keleti, 25 to 39 minutes and 745 HUF each way, and the palace costs 5,000 HUF on a weekday. Both fit into half a day.

Which day trips from Budapest need a tour?

Vienna and Bratislava in one day, and the Puszta horse show, because the trains stop at Kecskemét and the show is at a ranch outside it. The Danube Bend is the third: three towns on three timetables, with the Danube boats suspended for low water. Eger, Gödöllő, Szentendre, Lake Balaton and Hévíz are cheaper on your own.

Can you take a boat from Budapest to Szentendre or Visegrád?

Not at the moment. MAHART lists its Budapest to Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom boats as not running from 13 July to 11 October 2026 because of low water. When they run they are seasonal, so check mahartpassnave.hu for your date before you plan around one, and never rely on a boat for the way back.

Is Pécs a day trip from Budapest?

Not a comfortable one. The Mecsek InterCity takes 2 hours 26 minutes to 2 hours 33 minutes each way and costs 4,600 HUF, and the last direct train back leaves Pécs at 19:14. Stay a night.
