💡 The Short Version: For a first visit, stay in the Canal Ring or the Jordaan: the canal houses, the Anne Frank House (three of the Jordaan hotels below are 150 to 290 m from it in a straight line) and the Dam are on foot. Choose the Museum Quarter for the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, with the airport bus 397 stopping at Museumplein, Centrum to be at Centraal for the Eurostar and the trains (and the crowds), De Pijp for the Albert Cuyp market, and Noord for a free ferry across the IJ. Many canal-house hotels have no lift. The hotel adds the tourist tax, 12.5% of the room price before VAT, on top of 21% VAT since 1 January 2026.

Before you book
- Two taxes are on top of the room rate. The tourist tax is 12.5% of the price before VAT in 2026, with no cap per night or per stay, and VAT on hotel stays rose from 9% to 21% on 1 January 2026 (Gemeente Amsterdam; Belastingdienst). Together they add 33.5% to a rate quoted before tax (NOS, 28 November 2025). The coalition agreement of June 2026 plans 16% from 2027, rising a point a year to 20% (Coalitieakkoord Amsterdam 2026-2030). For which month to book, see best time to visit Amsterdam.
- Stairs decide the canal houses. Hotel Keizershof and the Amsterdam Wiechmann say they have no lift, and Ambassade, the Dylan and the Toren have rooms on steep internal stairs. Canal-house hotels sets them out hotel by hotel.
- The tram map changed on 29 March 2026. Tram 3 was abolished and tram 24 no longer runs along Vijzelstraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat (NH Nieuws). Check the GVB planner before you rely on a line in an older guide.
- Strikes stop trains, buses and ferries. The national strike of 9 September 2026 stopped NS trains, Connexxion and EBS buses and the GVB ferries for 24 hours (Rodi). Check the GVB app on the day.
- Check the address, not the name. The Amstel Hotel is listed on Hotels.com as InterContinental Amstel, the Conservatorium is now the Mandarin Oriental, and Hotel Brouwer is now The Craftsmen.
From the airport, Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal compares the train, bus 397 and the taxi, and Amsterdam public transport explains the fares and OVpay. For a ship, cruise terminal to the city centre says which terminal it uses and how far that is from Centraal, and for dinner where to eat in Amsterdam names the places by how many sources cite them. Common questions
What is the best area to stay in Amsterdam for a first visit?
The Canal Ring or the Jordaan, where the canal houses and the Anne Frank House are on foot. The Museum Quarter is the alternative if the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are the reason you are going: the Schiphol bus 397 stops at Museumplein and the Rijksmuseum.
How much is the tourist tax in Amsterdam?
12.5% of the room price before VAT in 2026, with no cap per night or per stay. VAT on hotel stays rose from 9% to 21% on 1 January 2026, so a room rate quoted before tax carries both.
Which area of Amsterdam is best for the airport?
The Museum Quarter, because the Schiphol bus 397 runs without a change to Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein, at €6.50 single. For Centrum and the Canal Ring, take the train to Centraal and walk or tram on.
Do Amsterdam canal-house hotels have lifts?
Some do and some do not. Hotel Estheréa and Hotel CC say on their own sites that they have a lift; Hotel Keizershof and the Amsterdam Wiechmann say they have none. Ask before you book if stairs matter.
