💡 The Short Version: Stay by Museumplein to walk to the Rijksmuseum (€25, open daily 9:00 to 17:00) and the Van Gogh Museum (€25, no door sales). Both sell timed entry only, so book a start time with your room. Three hotels are within about 400 m of the Rijksmuseum, the nearest, Max Brown Museum Square, about 150 m. The airport bus 397 stops at Museumplein and the Rijksmuseum, €6.50 single. The trade-off: the canals and the Anne Frank House are about 1.7 km north, a tram or a walk away. Or book a tour: the Rijksmuseum guided tour with entryad is from £63.89 (4.8 stars from 1,085 reviews, GetYourGuide, 1 October 2026).
Why stay here
- The Rijksmuseum is €25 for adults and free for 18 and under, open every day of the year from 9:00 to 17:00. Every visitor must book a start time, and once you are inside you can stay as long as you like. The museum cannot help if you arrive late. It says it is usually quieter before 11:00 and after 15:30, and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (rijksmuseum.nl, 1 October 2026).
- The Night Watch is on view in a glass chamber while it is restored, so some of the painting looks matt and dull (Rijksmuseum, 1 October 2026).
- The Van Gogh Museum is €25, free under 18, and sells tickets online only, each with a start time. You can arrive up to 30 minutes after it, and not before (vangoghmuseum.nl, 1 October 2026).
- The I amsterdam City Card includes the Rijksmuseum, which still needs a booked start time. It does not include the Van Gogh Museum or the Anne Frank House (iamsterdam.com, 1 October 2026).
- From Schiphol: bus 397 runs without a change to Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein, every 10 minutes, and takes a debit or credit card on board; it leaves from the bus station at Schiphol Plaza, so follow the signs (Connexxion, 1 October 2026). Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal compares it with the train and the taxi.
- By tram: the Overtoomsesluis bridge is shut from 16 September 2026 to 30 April 2027, which diverts trams 1, 12 and 13, and the tram map changed on 29 March 2026. Check the GVB planner for the line you need (GVB, 1 October 2026; Amsterdam public transport).
The hotels
Each hotel’s address is from its own website, read on 1 October 2026. Distances are in a straight line from that address to the museums’ entrances; the walk is longer. The links go to the hotel on Hotels.com.

Before you book
Museumplein is the site of the Christmas Village and the ice rink in winter, and of the municipality’s New Year show in 2025: see Christmas and the Light Festival and New Year in Amsterdam.
- The tourist tax is extra. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the price before VAT in 2026, with no cap, and VAT on hotel stays is 21% since 1 January 2026 (Gemeente Amsterdam; Belastingdienst).
- Book the museums with the room. Pick the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh start times as soon as your dates are fixed. The Anne Frank House is separate: its tickets are sold only on annefrank.org, in a weekly release six weeks ahead.
- Check the address, not the name. The Conservatorium is now the Mandarin Oriental, and the distances above are from each hotel’s own address.
- Elsewhere in Amsterdam: where to stay in Amsterdam compares the areas, and Amsterdam hotels in canal houses covers the hotels in the canal ring, with their stairs and lifts.
