💡 The Short Version: A ticket is €25 (€16 for students with proof, free under 18) and every visitor needs a start time, whatever the card they hold. There are no sales at the door and no waiting list. You cannot enter before your slot, and you have 30 minutes after it to arrive. Book on tickets.vangoghmuseum.com. GetYourGuide is one of the five resellers the museum names, but its entry ticket was from £23.06 (about €27) on 1 October 2026, €2 above the museum’s price. The museum is outside the I amsterdam City Card and has been since 1 June 2022. Or book a tour: the museum’s own 50-minute guided tour is €7.50 on top of entry, and GetYourGuide’s Official Van Gogh Museum Guided Tourad includes entry from £38.44.

How to buy
- Online only. Buy at tickets.vangoghmuseum.com or from the five resellers the museum names: Tours&Tickets, GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Musement and Klook. The museum warns that other platforms may sell fraudulent tickets.
- A start time is the entry. You cannot go in earlier than your start time. You have half an hour after it to arrive, and once inside you can stay until closing. Leaving and coming back is not allowed.
- Sold out is sold out. The museum has no waiting list: cancelled tickets go back into the booking system, and it says there is no point coming if your slot shows as sold out. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Changing a booking. Up to 48 hours before your slot, the museum’s contact form can move you if another slot is free. Do not rebook yourself: it can take a slot from another visitor. Tickets cannot be refunded.
- The name on the ticket is the booker’s. Each ticket has its own barcode, and it can be shown on a phone.
- Members of the Vincent’s Circles (Sunflower, Theo van Gogh, Yellow House and Corporate) enter on their pass without a booked slot.

What to see
The permanent exhibition, Van Gogh’s Masterpieces, shows his paintings with his drawings and letters. Allow two to three hours: the museum’s own figure for a visit including the café and shop.
- The masterpieces. The Potato Eaters (1885), The Bedroom (1888), Sunflowers (1889), Almond Blossom (1890) and Irises (1890), and self-portraits including the one in the grey felt hat. Drawings and letters hang with the paintings, and the museum’s online collection has an “on view” filter to check a work before you go.
- His circle and his influence. The collection includes work by Gauguin, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and Monet, and by Vlaminck and Van Dongen, who show his effect on the generation after him. It also holds hundreds of the Japanese prints he collected.
- The temporary exhibition. Included in the ticket. Yoshitoshi. Master of the Moon, a hundred Japanese prints, runs from 1 October 2026 to 4 January 2027. Whistler. Dandy and Disruptor, the first Dutch retrospective of James McNeill Whistler, runs from 16 October 2026 to 10 January 2027. Eva Gonzalès follows from 12 February to 20 June 2027.
What to skip: the hunt for Starry Night and Terrace of a Café at Night. The first is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the second is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
Hours, rules and getting there
- Open daily from 9:00, closing at 17:00 or 18:00 depending on the date, and at 21:00 on most Fridays. For late 2026: 1 to 12 and 19 to 31 October close at 18:00, and 13 to 18 October at 17:00 (14 October and the weekend, 18:00), Fridays 21:00; November and 1 to 18 December close at 17:00, Fridays 21:00 (not 27 November); 19 to 23 and 27 to 30 December close at 18:00; 24, 25, 26 and 31 December close at 17:00.
- Friday evenings: Vincent on Friday, on 27 November 2026 from 19:00, has tours, workshops and live acts.
- Bags: lockers in the cloakroom, free and self-service, take bags and rucksacks up to 45 × 25 × 25 cm. Larger bags, wheeled suitcases and trolleys of any size may be refused entry, and e-bike batteries over 100 Wh are not allowed. Bags may be screened at the entrance.
- Photos: allowed for personal use without flash, lamps, tripod or selfie stick. Filming is not allowed.
- Food and drink: none in the galleries; there is a bistro and cafés inside.
- Payment: cashless everywhere in the museum, including the shop and the cafés.
- Getting there: the entrance is on Museumplein, at Museumplein 6. The nearest stops are Museumplein and Concertgebouw. GVB changed its tram map on 29 March 2026, so ask the planner for the line from where you are staying; Amsterdam public transport has the fares. Schiphol’s Airport Express bus 397 stops at Museumplein as well.
The Rijksmuseum is on the same square and sells timed entries on its own, so a day with both is two bookings. The Anne Frank House is the other sight that needs a booking weeks ahead, and the I amsterdam City Card covers neither it nor this museum. For the rest of the city’s bookings, see what to book before you go in Amsterdam. To sleep a few minutes from the entrance, see hotels near the Rijksmuseum on the same square, or where to stay in Amsterdam for the other areas. 3 days in Amsterdam puts the museum on day two, and Amsterdam in one day treats it as the alternative to the Rijksmuseum if you want only one.
Common questions
How much is a Van Gogh Museum ticket?
€25 for an adult, €16 for a student enrolled in the EU or EEA with proof, and free under 18, from the museum's own ticket page on 1 October 2026. Every visitor needs a ticket with a start time, free entries included. The adult ticket was €22 in May 2024 and €24 in January 2025.
Can you buy Van Gogh Museum tickets at the door?
No. The museum says tickets are sold online only and that there is no waiting list, so there is no point arriving if your slot is sold out. Only members of the museum's Vincent's Circles can enter without a booked slot.
What if I am late for my Van Gogh Museum slot?
You cannot go in before your start time, but you have half an hour after it to arrive. The museum will move a booking up to 48 hours ahead, only if another slot is free. Tickets cannot be refunded.
Is the Van Gogh Museum included in the I amsterdam City Card?
No. The museum says it has not been part of the card since 1 June 2022, and the card's own FAQ says the same of the Anne Frank House. Book the museum directly, on its own site or from one of the resellers it names.
How long does the Van Gogh Museum take?
The museum says visitors spend two to three hours on average, including the café and the shop. Only the start time is fixed: once in, you can stay until closing, but you cannot leave and come back.
