The city’s New Year’s Eve Trail runs from 14:00 to 02:00 on 31 December, and the food and drink stalls open from 11:00. The 2026 edition is the 35th. It is free, and the city counts about 700,000 visitors. The sites, according to the organiser:

  • Freyung, Am Hof, Graben, Stephansplatz, Kärntner Straße and Neuer Markt: the trail through the old centre, from the Freyung to the Neuer Markt.

Die Fledermaus

The Volksoper also lists a Fledermaus that evening. The Tourist Board also lists a Silvestergala in the House of Strauss. The rest of the ball season starts on 11 November: Vienna ball season.

Where to stay

The Silvesterpfad runs through Stephansplatz, the Graben and the Kärntner Straße, so a hotel in that corner of the first district puts you on the trail. If you travel with a pram or a dog, read the rules above before you go out after 22:00. Hotels near St Stephen’s lists the hotels within 850 m, and where to stay in Vienna compares the districts.
