What to see
The Spanish Riding School keeps Lipizzaner stallions at the Hofburg. Its performances are in the baroque Winter Riding School, a hall the school calls the most beautiful riding hall in the world.

- The performance (about 70 minutes). The young stallions and the fully trained school stallions work in the School Quadrille, the schools on and above the ground and on the long rein, to classical Viennese music. This is the show that has the schools above the ground.
- The Morning Exercise (about 60 minutes). The daily training, in the same hall with music: loosening and muscle-strengthening work for horses at every stage, from the young dark stallions to the fully trained “white stars”. The school jumps are rarely shown, and it is “not a fixed programme”.
- The guided tour (about 60 minutes). It takes in the Winter Riding School, the Summer Riding School with one of the world’s largest oval horse walkers, and the stables in the Stallburg, where the stallions have been kept for more than 450 years.
Which one: the performance for the show, the Morning Exercise for the cheapest way into the hall, and the tour if the first two are sold out, since it is the only one that includes the stables.

What to skip: the standing places if you cannot stand for 70 minutes. The Winter Riding School has no lift, and the royal box and both galleries are reached by stairs only.

Rules, hours and getting there
- Cameras and recording equipment are strictly forbidden at the performances. There is no luggage storage, no dogs and no strollers in the hall.
- Children: from 3 to 6 sit free on an adult’s lap at a performance, and from 6 to 12 pay a reduced rate. Under 3 are not admitted to a performance or the tour.
- Entrances: there are three, at the Michaelerkuppel, Reitschulgasse and Josefsplatz. The one for your ticket is printed on it.
- The visitor centre at Michaelerplatz 1 is open daily 9:00 to 16:00, and the shop until 16:30.
- The Hofburg has no single ticket. The school’s tickets do not cover the Sisi Museum or the Treasury.
The school is in the Hofburg, a few steps from the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments, and the Hofburgkapelle is in the same complex. What to book before you go to Vienna puts the school beside the Opera and the museum slots, and Vienna Pass or Vienna City Card covers the pass rules. 3 days in Vienna builds a morning round the Morning Exercise. For another evening, Vienna classical concerts sorts the halls from the tourist concerts, and the Vienna State Opera sells standing places on the day. Schönbrunn Palace and the Kunsthistorisches Museum are the other Habsburg bookings. Hotels near St Stephen’s Cathedral and where to stay in Vienna cover the area.
