What to see in Hallstatt

An order that works on foot, from the lake up:

  1. The photo viewpoint. The postcard view over the lake to the Protestant church, a short walk from the market square (hallstatt.net).
  2. The market square. The Holy Trinity column stands in the middle, with cafés and restaurants round it. A fire on 20 September 1750 destroyed most of it. The Christmas market is on 8 December 2026, 10:00 to 18:30.
  3. The Charnel House. €2, children €0.50 · 10:00 to 17:00 daily in October. More than 600 painted skulls in St Michael’s Chapel next to the parish church, up steps or the Kirchenweg. From 1 November it opens Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30 to 15:30. Credit cards are accepted (hallstatt.net).
  4. The salt mine and Skywalk. Below.
