How a Heuriger works
The real Viennese Heuriger serves only wine from its own growing and shows a Föhrenbuschen, a pine bunch, and a sign reading Ausg’steckt, which also says it is open. Heuriger also names the current vintage, which may be called that until 11 November, St Martin’s Day. Under the Buschenschank law such a tavern may serve only cold food, its own wine and its own drinks such as juice, cider or schnapps; some also hold a licence for a hot buffet, beer or coffee. Most of the wine is white, and the Tourist Board adds that you can sometimes still hear the old Heurigenmusik and the Wienerlied (Vienna Tourist Board). The Tourist Board counts Heuriger culture, like the coffee house and the Würstelstand, as UNESCO intangible heritage.
- Cold food is a Brettljause, a board of cold cuts and spreads, or dishes from the buffet.
- A G’spritzter is wine with soda water.
- Gemischter Satz is a white from several grape varieties planted and pressed together; the Tourist Board mentions “Wiener Gemischter Satz” by the glass.
- Opening hours below are from each Heuriger’s own site where it prints them, and otherwise from the Vienna Tourist Board’s list. A Heuriger’s own site has the current dates.

Vienna public transport has the fares, and the S-Bahn through the centre is closed from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027. Common questions
What is a Heuriger?
A Viennese wine tavern that serves only wine from its own vineyards, with cold food and, in many, a buffet. The real thing hangs out a pine bunch, the Föhrenbuschen, and a sign reading Ausg'steckt, which also means it is open. The word also names the current year's wine, which may be called Heuriger until 11 November, St Martin's Day.
When are the Heurigen open?
Many are open all year, but the small ones open only in the warm months or on fixed dates, the Aussteckzeiten. Some open in alternate months. Check each Heuriger's own calendar before you go: Karl Lentner in Stammersdorf, for example, opens in February, April, June, August, October and December, and Weingut Christ in January, March, May, July, September and November.
How do I get to the Grinzing Heurigen?
Tram 38 runs from Schottentor to Grinzing. Bus 38A reaches the Leopoldsberg and the Kahlenberg, and a footpath leads down the Eiserne Hand to the Heurigen on the Nussberg. The Vienna Heurigen Express runs from U4 Heiligenstadt to the Kahlenberg and Grinzing on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from early April to the end of October.
Which Heurigen are open every day?
Wolff, at Rathstraße 46 to 50, daily 11:30 to 00:00, and Alter Bach-Hengl, at Sandgasse 7 to 9, daily 15:00 to 00:00. Mayer am Pfarrplatz is open every day too, from 16:00 Monday to Thursday and from 12:00 Friday to Sunday and on holidays.
Can I eat a hot meal at a Heuriger?
At some. Strictly a Buschenschank may serve only cold food and its own drinks. Some also hold a licence for a hot buffet, beer or coffee. Wolff serves Viennese home cooking and home-made Mehlspeisen, and Sirbu a hot buffet.
What do I drink at a Heuriger?
The house wine, by the glass or the quarter-litre, most of it white. A G'spritzter is wine with soda water. Wiener Gemischter Satz is a white wine from several grape varieties grown and pressed together.
