💡 The Short Version: On your own, pick one. Nazaré is a FlixBus from Lisbon, 1 hour 25 minutes at the fastest, from £2.99; Óbidos is a Rodoviária do Oeste bus to a stop about 100 metres from the walls; on CP’s timetable from 19 July 2026 buses replace the trains to it. Batalha Monastery is €15 and open daily. The big waves at Nazaré come with a winter swell and cannot be booked. To see both, book a tour: the small-group Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré and Óbidos tourad (from £43.05, 9 to 10 hours) links four places that are separate journeys on your own, and the Óbidos and Nazaré tourad (from £59.19, 8 hours) leaves out Fátima and Batalha.

What to see

Óbidos

A walled hill town of white houses, entered through the Porta da Vila and crossed by the Rua Direita. The castle is of Roman origin and was taken from the Moors in 1148; the town’s other monuments include the churches of Santa Maria, São Pedro and the Misericórdia. The tourist office is in Rua da Porta da Vila, open daily 9:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30 (turismo.obidos.pt). The local drink is ginja de Óbidos, a sour cherry liqueur, which the town’s tourism site suggests drinking from a chocolate cup. Walk in through the gate, along the Rua Direita and onto the walls; two to three hours covers it.

Nazaré

A fishing town on the Atlantic, with a beach below and a clifftop district, the Sítio, above it. The waves are at Praia do Norte, which you see from the lighthouse at the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo. The World Surf League runs its Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, a one-day tow-in contest, inside a competition window: last season’s ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026, and the surfers wait on standby for a swell (World Surf League, 1 November 2025). To see the waves, go in winter on a day the swell arrives; no tour or ticket can book one. Allow two hours.

Batalha Monastery

€15 · open daily 9:00 to 18:30 (last entry 18:00) to 15 October, then 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30)

A Dominican monastery begun in the late 14th century after King João I’s victory at Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The monuments body calls it the most significant building of Portuguese Gothic: a church, two cloisters and two royal pantheons, with Manueline decoration. It is closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December (Museus e Monumentos de Portugal). Allow an hour or more.

Which one to pick on your own

  • Nazaré for the coast and, from November, the chance of big waves: the first coach at 8:00 gives a full day, with the last coach back at 20:45.
  • Óbidos for a walk round a medieval town: two to three hours, and the bus stops about 100 metres from the centre.
  • Batalha if the monastery is the reason: the two coaches a day fix the timetable.

Combining it with somewhere else

Óbidos and Nazaré are two of the day trips from Lisbon. The Porto day coach tour also calls at both: see Porto from Lisbon for the 13-hour version and why a night in Porto is better. For a trip on the train, see Évora, and for the bookings in Lisbon itself, what to book before you go to Lisbon. The Nazaré coaches leave from Lisbon Oriente, on the Metro Red Line from the airport (Lisbon airport to the city centre), and best time to visit Lisbon gives the month-by-month weather for planning a coast day.

Common questions

How do I get from Lisbon to Nazaré?

By FlixBus from Lisbon Oriente, Sete Rios or Jardim Zoológico to Nazaré's bus terminal. FlixBus lists a fastest journey of 1 hour 25 minutes, at least nine coaches a day, the first at 8:00 and the last at 19:35, with fares from £2.99 on its UK site (1 October 2026). Coaches back leave from 9:10 to 20:45.

How do I get from Lisbon to Óbidos?

By Rodoviária do Oeste bus. Óbidos's tourist office says there are dozens of connections a day and that the bus stop is about 100 metres from the historic centre. The Linha do Oeste train station is about a kilometre from the centre, and CP's timetable from 19 July 2026 has road buses in place of trains between Mira Sintra-Meleças and Caldas da Rainha, which includes Óbidos.

Can I see the big waves at Nazaré on a day trip?

Only in the winter swell season, and not to order. The World Surf League runs its Nazaré tow-in event inside a window, which last season ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026, and calls it at short notice. The lighthouse at the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo looks over Praia do Norte, where the waves break.

How much is Batalha Monastery?

€15 for an adult. It is open daily 9:00 to 18:30 (last entry 18:00) until 15 October, then 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30) until 31 March, and closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December (Museus e Monumentos de Portugal).
