💡 The Short Version: A day trip to the Algarve is a tour of 10 to 12 hours, from £76.02, and most of it is on the road: the fastest coach to Lagos takes 3 hours 40 minutes. The Benagil Cave is entered by boat only; since July 2024 landing on its beach and swimming in are banned, and boats and visit times are limited. The train reaches Faro in about 3 hours, not Benagil. If the cave is the reason to go, a night in Lagos and a 2-hour boat from there (£34.17ad) leave more time at the coast than the tour does. Or book a tour: the Algarve Adventures tour with a Benagil Cave boat ridead (from £133.25, 11 to 12 hours) is the most reviewed from Lisbon.

Is a day trip realistic?

Only as a tour, and only if you accept the arithmetic. Lagos is 189 miles from Lisbon and the fastest FlixBus takes 3 hours 40 minutes, so a 12-hour day leaves under five hours at the coast. A tour hides the journey in a guided day; it does not shorten it.

The alternative costs little more: a coach from Lisbon to Lagos from £4.49 (FlixBus UK site, 1 October 2026), a night in Lagos, and a boat to the cave in the morning. Day trips from Lisbon has the trips that fit in a day.

What the cave is

The Benagil Cave is a sea cave on the coast of Lagoa, with an opening in its roof. It lies inside the Parque Natural Marinho do Recife do Algarve – Pedra do Valado. In July 2024 the Maritime Authority and the Lagoa municipality, with the environment agencies, published joint navigation rules for it (Autoridade Marítima Nacional, 30 July 2024):

  • No landing on or use of the beach inside the cave.
  • No kayak hire without a guide in the area of the caves.
  • No swimming into the caves, and no flotation aids.
  • Limits on the number of boats and kayaks in the cave, and maximum times for a visit.
  • One guide kayak for every six kayaks carrying visitors.

Operators face fines of €300 to €216,000 under the environmental offences law. You see the cave from a boat, for a limited time.

Back from Faro: Alfa Pendular at 16:00, reaching Lisboa Oriente at 19:05, and the Intercidades at 18:15, reaching it at 21:56. The Intercidades is €24.55 single or €44.50 return in second class (CP fares, 2026).

The train and the coach stop at Faro and Lagos; neither reaches the cave, which needs a boat from Benagil, Portimão, Lagos or another coastal harbour.

A night away instead

Take a morning coach to Lagos, spend the afternoon there, and book the boat for the next morning. A coach from £4.49 each way and the 2-hour Lagos boat at £34.17 come to about £43 before the night’s accommodation, against £76.02 to £133.25 for the tour, and the boat day starts at the coast, not 3 hours 40 minutes from it. For the closer trips, see Sintra and Cascais, both under an hour by train.

The Algarve is one of the day trips from Lisbon, and the longest. If you want a day on trains instead, see Évora and Porto from Lisbon. The Faro trains leave from Lisboa Oriente, on the Metro Red Line from the airport (Lisbon airport to the city centre), and 3 days in Lisbon has the plan for the days you spend in the city. For the bookings in Lisbon itself, see what to book before you go to Lisbon.
