In this guide
💡 The Short Version: A currywurst is a pork sausage in curry-ketchup sauce, and Berlin’s two classic stands are Konnopke’s Imbiss under the U2 viaduct in Prenzlauer Berg, which has traded since 1930 and is closed on Sunday and Monday, and Curry 36 on Mehringdamm, open daily from 09:00 to 05:00. The döner in Berlin is Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap on Mehringdamm, with a frequent queue and take-away only, and Rüyam in Schöneberg. Or book a tour: the Döner Kebab Tour and Sights, including Gourmet Kebabad is from €45 for 3 hours.
📊 The evidence behind this guide. This pass read 20 currywurst list pages and 19 döner pages from English-language and German-language publishers, so the counts are small: three English and five German publishers wrote the currywurst lists, and four English and five German the döner lists. Berlin-only sites without a named newsroom and listing sites are not counted, and the English and German counts are shown apart.
⚠️ Konnopke’s is closed on Sunday and Monday. Its hours are Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 12:00 to 19:00. Curry 36 and Mustafa’s are open every day.
The currywurst
A currywurst is a sausage sliced and covered in a curry-ketchup sauce, sold with chips or a bread roll. The question every stand asks is mit Darm oder ohne, with or without skin. Curry 36 explains it: the sausage invented in Berlin in the 1950s was a boiled sausage without a casing, and the crisper version in a pork casing came later. visitBerlin says the currywurst started its march out of a Berlin kiosk (visitBerlin).

Konnopke’s Imbiss
Schönhauser Allee 44B, Prenzlauer Berg · U2 Eberswalder Straße · Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 18:00, Saturday 12:00 to 19:00 · closed Sunday and Monday · Cited by 6 sources in the currywurst lists (2 English, 4 German) · konnopke-imbiss.de
Max Konnopke started selling sausages in Prenzlauer Berg on 4 October 1930, and in 1960, according to the stand, his family brought the first currywurst to East Berlin, skinless, with a sauce recipe the family still keeps secret. The sausage is still skinless. The third generation introduced slicing it onto a paper plate with extra curry powder and five degrees of heat.

Curry 36 says its currywurst was born here in 1980, in a doorway on Mehringdamm with 1.12 metres of counter, and that the house number gave the stand its name. visitBerlin calls it the western counterpart to Konnopke’s. The sausages come from the Havelland organic manufactory, with or without a casing, with the stand’s own ketchup and curry-powder mix, and there is a vegan sausage and a vegan ketchup. Three more branches have their own hours: Zoologischer Garten daily 08:00 to 05:00, the Hauptbahnhof daily 08:00 to 22:00 and Warschauer Straße daily 09:00 to 23:00.

Berlin nightlife and clubs covers the late hours, and 3 days in Berlin fits a currywurst at Konnopke’s into a day that is not Sunday or Monday. Where to stay in Berlin compares the areas, with Kreuzberg for Mehringdamm and Prenzlauer Berg for Schönhauser Allee.
