It is in Oranienburg, about 55 minutes from central Berlin: the S1 from Friedrichstraße to Oranienburg (about 45 minutes, a train every 20 minutes), then bus 804 (7 minutes, hourly) or a 20-minute walk. A Berlin ABC ticket covers it (€5.00 single, €12.90 for 24 hours). Get off at Oranienburg, not at Sachsenhausen station. The memorial publishes its hours and its guided-tour arrangements on its website, and the hours change between its summer and winter seasons. What the memorial covers
The site held the Oranienburg concentration camp in 1933 and 1934 and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp from 1936 to 1945. From 1945 to 1950 it was a Soviet Special Camp. The German Democratic Republic opened a national memorial here in 1961, and it has been the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum since 1993. The memorial’s own history pages follow these periods.
The memorial has permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions and a Visitor Information Centre, which is the place to ask about guided tours and audio guides. The memorial recommends its guided tours for visitors aged 14 and over.
