💡 The Short Version: Stay in Prati, the residential grid north of the Vatican, for an early slot at the Vatican Museums, which open at 8:00 Monday to Saturday; their entrance is on Viale Vaticano, and metro line A stops at Ottaviano. Stay in the Borgo, the lanes between Castel Sant’Angelo and St Peter’s, to be closest to St Peter’s Basilica, open every day from 7:00. The hotels below are all within about 900 m of the Museums’ door. The Fiumicino coaches stop at Via Crescenzio in Prati. The trade-off: the Colosseum and the Forum are across the river, a metro ride with a change at Termini.
Why stay here
- The Vatican Museums open from 8:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 18:00. They are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free from 9:00 to 14:00 (museivaticani.va, 29 September 2026). The Vatican Museums tickets guide covers the official ticket and the tours.
- St Peter’s Basilica is open every day from 7:00 to 20:00, last entry by 19:15 (basilicasanpietro.va, 30 September 2026). The St Peter’s dome guide has the dome’s tickets and hours. Castel Sant’Angelo, at the other end of the Borgo, has its own.
- Getting in from Fiumicino: Terravision’s coach to Via Crescenzio takes about 40 minutes, from €6, and SIT runs the same route. See Fiumicino and Ciampino airports to central Rome.
- To the rest of Rome: metro line A runs from Ottaviano and Lepanto to Spagna for the Spanish Steps and on to Termini, where it meets line B for the Colosseum.
- Or book the early tour: the early-entry tour of the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’sad (from £93.42, 4.9 stars from 3,537 reviews, GetYourGuide, 30 September 2026) starts early in the morning with an English-speaking guide.

Before you book
- The tourist tax is extra: Rome charges each guest €10 a night at a five-star hotel, €7.50 at a four-star and €6 at a three-star, for up to 10 nights, paid at the hotel (comune.roma.it, rates in force since 1 October 2023).
- Check the address, not the name. Several hotels have Vaticano or San Pietro in their name; the distances above are from each hotel’s own address.
- Elsewhere in Rome: where to stay in Rome compares the areas for the Colosseum, the Pantheon and Trastevere, hotels near Termini suits day trips by train, and hotels with a rooftop pool or terrace lists the summer pools.
