The hammams, compared

A hammam is a Turkish bathhouse. You sweat on a heated marble platform, the göbek taşı, are scrubbed with a kese, a coarse mitt, and washed in foam, and the services run from the entry price to a massage. The prices are the lowest package on each bath’s own site, in the currency it prints, and lira prices rise with inflation. The counts are the number of English and Turkish publishers, out of 41 and 25 read, that name the bath.

Can men and women go to a hammam together in Istanbul?

At Süleymaniye Hamamı, yes: it is mixed and communal, designed for couples and families, and all its therapists are men. The other hammams on this page have separate sections for men and women with same-gender attendants, and Kılıç Ali Paşa is women only from 08:00 to 16:00 and men only from 16:30 to 23:30.

What do you wear in a hammam in Istanbul?

Çemberlitaş and Süleymaniye allow swimwear, and Süleymaniye asks for shorts for men and a bikini, shorts and wrap for women. Galatasaray Hamamı says it is not allowed to be totally naked on its premises. Towels and slippers are supplied at Çemberlitaş, Cağaloğlu, Süleymaniye and Ağa.

Do I need to book a hammam in Istanbul?

Reserve at Kılıç Ali Paşa a week ahead, as the bath advises, and at Süleymaniye, where the deposit is non-refundable. Çemberlitaş recommends booking by phone or WhatsApp. At Zeyrek Çinili, arrive 15 minutes early: a delay of 15 minutes or more cancels the booking.

Is the GetYourGuide price the same as the hammam's own?

For the entry packages at Cağaloğlu and Hürrem Sultan, yes: GetYourGuide's lowest price is €95 and €110, the same as the Istanbul Dream and Pir-ü Pak on the hammams' own sites. The large listings, such as the €45 private bath with 4,114 reviews, are different businesses.
