What to see
The DDR Museum shows daily life in East Germany. The museum’s own listing says the items are not behind glass: you open the drawers and cupboards of furnished rooms and browse. There is a Trabant to sit in, with a simulated drive through prefabricated housing districts, and the listing also mentions dancing to East German rock and a football game.

What to see next: the history behind it is in two free places. The Berlin Wall Memorial covers the border, and the Stasi Museum and Hohenschönhausen cover the secret police. The museum’s separate depot in Marzahn, which it calls the world’s largest collection of everyday life in the GDR, can be visited on a guided tour booked on the museum’s site.
