Day trip

A champagne day trip from Paris: Reims by TGV, or a small-group tour to Épernay

Reims is 45 minutes by TGV and Épernay 80 minutes on a direct train, and the big houses run their own cellar tours from €25 to €85. The vineyards and Hautvillers need a car, which is what the £197 and up tours from Paris sell. Prices and opening days checked with the houses on 30 September 2026.

💡 The Short Version: Reims is the easy version: a TGV in about 45 minutes, then a cellar tour at a big house such as Mumm (€30 to €60, 1½ hours). Épernay is a direct train from Gare de l’Est in 80 minutes, with Moët & Chandon five minutes from the station. Houses close on set days, so check the calendar before you pick a date: from 1 November Mumm is shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The vineyards and the village of Hautvillers need a car. Or book a tour: the small-group day trip with six tastingsad (from £197.13, 4.9 stars from 368 reviews, 11 hours, at most eight people) leaves Paris at 7:00, and nobody has to drive after the tastings.

Getting there on your own

  • Reims has two TGV stations: Reims-Centre, in the middle of the city, and Champagne-Ardenne TGV in Bezannes, which a tram links to the centre (reims-tourisme.com).
  • From Charles de Gaulle the TGV to Reims takes 30 minutes, so a flight day can double as a champagne day.
  • Between the two towns the TER runs on the “Ligne des Bulles”, the bubbles line, from Reims to Épernay.
  • The vineyards at Hautvillers, where Dom Pérignon is buried, and in the villages between the two towns are reached by car or on a tour.

Reims or Épernay

  • Reims is the shorter train and has the cathedral where the kings of France were crowned, so it fits a day that is half cellar, half city. Mumm and Taittinger are both there.
  • Épernay is a longer train, but Moët & Chandon and Mercier are both on the Avenue de Champagne, so two cellars fit in a day on foot.
  • The one thing to check is the house’s calendar. Closing days differ from house to house and change from November.

Other day trips

Champagne is one of several day trips from Paris, and has the highest-priced tours among them. For a cheaper day that also needs a train, see the Loire châteaux or Monet’s garden at Giverny. For what to book in the city first, see what to book before you go.

Common questions

Can you visit Champagne in a day from Paris?

Yes. Reims is about 45 minutes from Paris by TGV, and Moët & Chandon says a direct train from Gare de l'Est reaches Épernay in 80 minutes. Both towns have champagne houses that run their own cellar tours. A tour from Paris adds the vineyards and Hautvillers, which need a car.

How much is a champagne cellar visit in Reims and Épernay?

Mumm in Reims charges €30, €42 or €60 depending on the tasting. Moët & Chandon in Épernay charges €48 to €85 for its 1½-hour tours, and Mercier's cellar train tour is €25 to €35 with an audio guide, €45 with a guide. Prices read on the houses' own sites on 30 September 2026.

Is a champagne tour from Paris worth it?

It is worth it for the vineyards and the small producers, which need a car, and so that nobody drives after the tastings. It costs more than doing Reims alone: the small-group tour with six tastings is from £197.13 on GetYourGuide, against a €30 cellar visit at Mumm plus the train fare.

Do champagne houses need to be booked?

Book Mumm and Taittinger online. Moët & Chandon takes visitors without a booking but recommends one, and Mercier sells same-day tours by phone only. Opening days change with the season, so check the house's calendar before you go.
