The tip-based walk

Free Tour of Istanbul

Tips only · about 2½ hours · Sultanahmet Park · English and Spanish

SANDEMANs lists the Istanbul walk as a partner tour, run by Viaurbis rather than by SANDEMANs itself. It meets in Sultanahmet Park, close to the decorative circular fountain, and covers the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and its Obelisk of Thutmose III, the Caferağa Madrasah, where craftspeople work and sell, and the wooden Ottoman houses of Soğuk Çeşme Street. The guide’s tip is optional, and entrance fees, food and transport are not included. SANDEMANs advises groups of more than six to book a private tour, and the walk welcomes wheelchair users (neweuropetours.eu).

Fener and Balat

Fener and Balat are two neighbourhoods on the Golden Horn with Greek, Bulgarian, Armenian and Jewish heritage, away from Sultanahmet. Three tours cover them, and the churches decide what to wear: the operator says men and women in shorts, sleeveless tops or mini dresses are not admitted.

The ticket includes entry to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and the Bulgarian Iron Church. It ends at the Ahrida Synagogue, one of the oldest in the city, with a Turkish coffee. Expect a climb up the hill of Fener, and rain does not cancel it.

Common questions

Are the free walking tours in Istanbul really free?

They have no fixed price: the guide is paid by tips. The SANDEMANs free tour of Istanbul, run by its partner Viaurbis, lasts about 2½ hours, meets in Sultanahmet Park near the circular fountain and runs in English and Spanish. Entrance fees to museums and monuments are not included.

How much is a walking tour in Istanbul?

From €13 to €17 for a 3-hour Fener and Balat walk, €15 for Galata and İstiklal Street, €25 for the Asian side with a ferry ride, €26 for the Grand Bazaar rooftops and €47 for a Segway tour. These are GetYourGuide's lowest 'from' prices for one adult.

Do Istanbul walking tours include Hagia Sophia?

The walks on this page do not include a Hagia Sophia ticket. The tip-based walk covers the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia without entry fees. Guided tours with the ticket start at €33, and guides cannot talk inside the building.

What do I wear for a Fener and Balat tour?

Cover your shoulders and knees. The operator says the churches do not admit men or women in shorts, sleeveless tops or mini dresses, and advises bringing a scarf or a long dress. The tour climbs the hill of Fener and runs in any weather.

How do I get back from the Asian side tour?

The tour ends in Kadıköy and the ticket covers the ferry over, not the return. Ferries back to Eminönü cost ₺65.21 on an Istanbulkart from 20 July 2026, and the guide explains the way back.
