Which ticket to buy
- Take an Early Bird or Night Owl slot if you can. It is £4 off, and the attraction says morning and evening are its quietest times. The next dates are 24 to 31 October 2026: 8.30 and 8.45 in the morning, 7pm to 8pm in the evening.
- Pick a daytime slot on a clear day for the view. The Camera Obscura gives guided demonstrations in daylight; after dark or in poor weather it shows a projection film recorded from the top of the tower.
- Book ahead at weekends and in school holidays. Walk-up tickets depend on spaces.
- Compare the view with the free ones. The best views in Edinburgh separates the free viewpoints from the paid ones.

What to see
The attraction occupies a 17th-century tenement at the top of the Royal Mile, where Maria Short moved her observatory and camera obscura in 1853 from Calton Hill, where she opened them in 1835. Climb to the top while the light is good, then work down:
- Floor 6: the rooftop terrace and the Camera Obscura. The terrace gives a panorama of the city’s landmarks. In the Camera Obscura, a mirror at the top of the tower and three lenses project the city live; demonstrations run in daylight, with a film after dark.
- Floor 5: the Magic Gallery. Optical illusions and hands-on exhibits.
- Floor 4: Light Fantastic. Interactive exhibits, many unique to the attraction.
- Floor 3: Eye Spy Edinburgh. Cameras and mirrors, including live city view-cameras, microscopes and a thermal camera.
- Floor 2: Bewilderworld. The biggest illusions: the Vortex Tunnel and the Mirror Maze.
- Ground floor. The AutoWed marriage machine, the Giant Kaleidosphere and the shop. The AutoWed can be used without a ticket, through the gift shop.
What to skip: the Vortex Tunnel on Floor 2 if spinning upsets you; it is a rotating tunnel you walk through.
