💡 The Short Version: Orvieto is easy on your own: the direct 8:20 regional train from Termini reaches Orvieto at 10:22 for €10.10, and the town is a €1.30 ride up the hill from the station. The Duomo ticket is €8, and on Sundays the cathedral opens for visits only from 10:00 to 11:00 and from 13:00, so go on a weekday. Civita di Bagnoregio, the hilltop village you enter by footbridge, is a Cotral bus ride beyond Orvieto; entry is €5. Or book a tour: the Civita and Orvieto day trip with lunch and winead (from £80.57) does both in a day without the bus timetables.
Getting there on your own
Trenitalia’s times and fares, searched on 30 September 2026 for Tuesday 13 and Saturday 17 October. Regional fares are fixed; the Intercity is a “from” fare.
| Train | Leaves Roma Termini | Arrives in Orvieto | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional, one change | 6:45 | 8:17 | €10.10 |
| Regional, direct | 8:20 | 10:22 | €10.10 |
| Intercity, direct | 10:15 | 11:37 | From €13.90 |
- Trains back leave Orvieto at 15:27 (arrives 17:05), 17:29 (19:45), 19:43 (21:35), 20:15 (an Intercity, 22:20, from €10.90) and 21:29 (23:20).
- Up the hill: the station is at the foot of the rock the town stands on. The funicular from the station forecourt climbs to Piazza Cahen, by St Patrick’s Well, in two minutes; a €1.30 ticket covers it and the town buses for 90 minutes. It is suspended until maintenance works finish, and a shuttle bus runs the same route at the same times: every 10 minutes from 7:30 to 20:30 on weekdays (first at 7:10), and every 15 minutes from 8:00 to 20:30 on Sundays and holidays (fsbusitalia.it, notice of 17 June 2026).
- One ticket for both: book to “Orvieto Centro” on Trenitalia and the fare includes the ride up: €11.40 from Termini on the 8:20. Collect the pass at the Trenitalia ticket office in Orvieto station (fsbusitalia.it, 30 September 2026).
